Re: 24 x 46 RF Patio Build

I know it's no fun to break equipment but congrats on the new Lincoln. I've been looking at new ones for several years but my trusty old Lincoln just won't die! Hope you get as much use out of yours as I have which will make the investment well worth it.

Re: Smokestack material

Round tubing comes in both 5" and 6" (outside) diameters and both have a wall thickness of 0.625" but I'm sure they will be difficult to source and probably only sold in 20' lengths at most yards. And tho I agree with the weight and cost per pound savings in using tubing, it just may not be availabl...

Yikes! I would be interested in your wood consumption!

But, I agree, cold weather is no excuse not to fire up your pit.

I'm also concerned about the grease, heat and soot. They seem to operate like a drawer slide and not sure how well they will hold up. Interesting idea tho....keep us posted.

Re: Stuck wheels

Wd40 makes a pretty good penetrating/rust oil that I have used with success. The biggest problem is getting (any type of) oil into the hub in the first place. You might be able to drill a hole in the wheel hub--just thru the hub, not the axle--- and work some oil into the center section between the ...

Re: offset refurbish

Only the horizontal length is added in the calculation. The vertical is "free" space but I think you will find the temps pretty un-even for cooking so it will become mainly a warming box. Trying to keep that big of a vertical up to 225-250 for smoking would probably make your main chamber too hot to...

Re: 250 build

Don't confuse top of door with bottom of door. The TOP cut is often 1" past top center (towards the back of the tank) so any rain will fall off the back of the tank and not down the front, under the door and into the tank. The width of your flange will allow for some wiggle room in this. The BOTTOM ...

Re: Hello from central IL

That is a BIG pit...it is going to use a lot of wood. I have an insulated firebox and love it for the safety factor (the outer skin stays a few hundred degrees cooler) but I'm not too sure I save much wood. Mine still takes 2 splits every 45-60 minutes..... Not saying it isn't a good thing to do, ju...

Sounds like you guys had a successful cook....glad to hear all turned out as expected.

I tend to run late by about an hour but today ended up cooked and hour-rested with 3 hours to go till mealtime. Oh well, at least I wasn't the hold-up this year!

Re: Thanksgiving Brisket

Glad I'm not alone!

I've done some really good turkeys in the past and convinced that smoking them is the best method. It's probably too late, but I've found they will cook faster and stay moister if you spatchcock the bird. I do this with my chickens as well and have never been disappointed.

Thanksgiving Brisket

I really dislike 2:30 am but really enjoy a good brisket. Had the alarm set for 4:00 but couldn't sleep so figured I'd get the pit fired up and get the show on the road. I've never been a big fan of turkey so this year decided to break the trend and picked up a full packer, prime cut brisket. Trimme...

Re: 120 gallon first build

Flux wire is horrible! They make tiny "toothbrush" sized wire brushes that might work for you. I have a small air grinder with a 1.5 inch flap wheel that works really good for tight places that my big grinder won't get to. The minimal cost to convert to shielding gas is worth it just for the aggrava...

Re: LEGACY 4800 REVERSE FLOW SMOKER

I put in a warming box and added in dampers to feed it from both the firebox and the cook chamber. With this set-up I can pretty much set it for any temp I need and either the same or different from the main cooking chamber. I have smoked in it a few times but mainly use it for a warming box or to b...

I've built one. Great size pit for backyard use but still has plenty of room for groups. Good plans, easy to follow.
