Re: Paint drum smoker

I ended up cutting a 1/2 moon shape throat. Another question-for the chimney I'm going to make a collector, similar to a Jambo with a 4 inch pipe. I'm guessing I need to cut a 4 inch hole in the CC and make the collector 4 inches square or bigger?

Re: Paint drum smoker

Thanks!! What are the advantages/disadvantages of the baffle plate? Also since I have more room to cut would a rectangle shaped cut be okay for the throat?

Re: Paint drum smoker

I'm just about ready to weld the firebox together and before I do I'm going to cut the throat out. I would like to have the grate around 11 inches from the bottom so do you recommend the throat at grate level or just below or as close to the bottom of the CC? Also how far from the top of the throat ...

Re: Door and intake question

Yes I have the paint drum smoker, I'll post there from here on. But I just about finished the door and intake. This is going to be the inside of the door(the slide piece will not go on like what's in the picture) I still need to weld a couple things and see if the guy wants me to bend the rod to sli...

Re: Door and intake question

I've got the door and intake cut now my question is how high on the cook chamber should the throat be? I'd like to have the grate around 11 inches from the bottom of the CC should I keep the throat at or around grate level or a bit lower?

Door and intake question

When you guys cut the door on the firebox, do you have a particular size to go by? This firebox will be 17 1/2x17 1/2x17. I'm looking to cut the door 1 1/2 from the bottom and 3 inches from the top and sides. Also on the intake how high from the bottom of the door do you go? Here is what I'm thinking.

Paint drum smoker

I'm finally getting started on a smoker for a driver at work. He wanted a paint drum so got to keep the customer happy! The ends are panned out bad so I've cut a piece of 10 gauge on each end to help with the firebox and angle iron for the grate. Couple questions-on the chimney, do you guys place it...

Re: Wire size

If using flux core wire .030 is the smallest size you can get. Shielding you can get .023. it all depends on the thickness. Keep in mind flux core doesn't work well on less than 11 gauge/1/8 thick

Re: Door Flanges

What's the thickness of the door & flat bar you are using? I've practiced on a 55 gallon drum and it seems to be better using thinner metal

Re: Just to make sure

One question about firebox size-I see where it's not recommended to make the firebox over 115% but what percent would be minimum I.e. 95%?

Just to make sure

Sometime soon I'm going to make a smoker if nothing crazy happens! I have a Chargriller with a smoker box I've used several times, but measuring it and comparing it to the pit calculator I don't think they are on the same page. I'm using this to make sure I understand the calculator for later on. Th...

Another newbie

I've been browsing this site looking at smokers and like what I have saw. I'm from North Carolina about 30 minutes west of Lexington so our preferred way to BBQ is pit cooked but I plan to build a smoker and later on a bigger cooker for pit cooked. All the cookers I've made are 55 gallon paint barre...

Re: Lincoln 180 mig

Lincoln is a good machine. Gas basically cleans up the bead, no chipping slag or brushing. Flux core you will brush and have some slag. Depending on how much you weld, a 40 cf tank can last a while. Also flux core doesn't work good on less than 1/8 thick steel. The welder your have will meet all of ...
