Types of smokers

Did a sanctioned event a few weeks ago. Was shocked how many teams were cooking on UDS. This was in Texas at a IBCA event. Are a majority of competition teams using UDS or was this just an anomaly? Thoughts on using a UDS at a competition? One we are doing in October is disallowing pellet smokers.

Grinder stuck

I have a DeWalt grinder that currently has a cutting wheel on it. Problem is I can not get the the wheel off as the nut is now stuck. I only hand tightened the nut, but while using the cutting wheel, it seized up pretty good. Any tips for getting the nut loose?

Tuning Plates?

I built a Mack pit, but made it a standard offset, not a reverse flow. I have between 30 and 70 degrees (depends on fire temp) between my lower and upper cooking racks. Will tuning plates help this? If so, what size should my tuning plates be? 4 inch or 6 inch? Thanks for any help here. Very first c...

Question for you... I am having a similar problem with the door jamb on the firebox being too big. Did you just leave the overhang or trim it down?

Mack build help needed

Let me preface this with I am a new builder (and welder). I am attempting to build a Mack. I have an issue with the firebox door jam. The 2.5 angle iron noted in the plans is too big. Do I cut it down? Ideas? 7B8DFE0E-C892-4494-A0E6-4F28D7EEA20D.jpeg Also, my outer plate is warped. I assume I just d...

Had a friend tell me about Herculiner bed liner. He used it to paint his trailer. Any thoughts on using this to paint a trailer with? He said it held up extremely well.

Mack Fire Grate Height?

I am building a Mack. I insulated and raised the bottom of the firebox for easier ash cleanup and the fact that this is sitting directly on the trailer. With that being said, should I still put the fire grate up 5 inches? That seems too high in my opinion. Any more experienced people have a thought?...

Lights for a trailer?

Watched a video of a manufacturer I can not find now that talked about the type of lights he reccomended. What kind of lighting do you use on your trailers? Not the lights for the trailer brakes, etc. but the lights for night time smoking. So that you can light up your work area and smoker. I will n...

Found a out builder that said if I furnish all the material for the trailer only he would weld together for 450. That seems reasonable? I am located in Houston Texas.

Welding machine?

I am about to embark on my first trailer build followed by building a Mack smoker on it. I am new to welding. I have a cheap Chicago Electric 125 to build these with. Talked to a client today that recommended to NOT use the cheap welder, but go get a bigger machine. Thoughts? I also have access to a...

first time builder questions

Looking to build a trailer for a BBQ pit for competition. Looking at the 5200 lb axle. If that too much over kill? Pit will weigh under 1500 lbs. would it ride better on the highway being 5200 vs 3500 or no difference? Never built a trailer before. Any thoughts/comments would be welcomed.

Wheels for my Mack build?

I am planning on building a Mack, without the warming cabinet to be my home smoker. So this will not be trailer mounted. What wheels do you recommend?

I do plan on loading this onto a trailer to take for competitions as well from time to time.

No shielding gas. I do have access to a welder that does shielding gas though. Does it give that much better of a weld? Remember I am a beginner, so far welds are pretty ugly....
