No vent needed, obviously better if you can weld the seam tho.

Door is fine as is. No need for a full weld.
Thanks. I was also afraid that if its fully welded, I would have made a bomb lol

Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

Hey question for those of you that have built an insulated firebox here. The outside wall of the firebox is fully welded to both end plates and the inside is fully welded on the door side but not on the CC side. You can see the only part of the only seam on the firebox that isn't welded in the pictu...

Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

Hey guys, This is my second time writing this post. I had it fully drafted and then previewed one of the images. When I hit the back button to go back to the post, my draft had been deleted. Very frustrating. Anyway here we go again…I made some progress today. I finished the firebox door latch, fixe...

Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

Hey thanks for the advice. I have a clever idea that im going to try. Ill let yall know when i get it done and how well it works. Question for yall: I bought a few Teltru thermometers with 4" stems and am about to mount them to my smoker. How close do I want the stem to the grates as far as hight is...

Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

Next task was to work on making the grate holders. For this I am using 1" angle iron thats 1/8" thick. This is the same material im using for my grates. I measured and cut the pieces to 29.5" long since my tank is a 30 OD tank with 1/4" walls. Next was time to decide where exactly my grates would go...

Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

Another build update! I was traveling last weekend but got some time during the Thanksgiving holiday to work on the smoker. First, the firebox door: I cut a "T" shaped piece of metal out with my plasma cutter and welded a horseshoe onto it to form the handle to the door. Then I drilled a 3/8 hole in...

Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

While I was working on the firebox door, I also worked on installing the door stops. I am using horseshoes in my case, I think they fit the theme of the build. This was pretty easy once I got my guide lines marked with soapstone. A tip for those of you doing this: Weld 1 stop in place and open the f...

Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

Hey guys, I have another build update! This weekend was a productive one. I did a good bit of work on the firebox and the firebox door. To start out with, I marked out the firebox door with some soapstone. I used my model in Fusion 360 to get the approximate dimensions and then adjusted them accordi...

Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

Looks really good thejm. I know exactly what you mean about slow progress then leaping ahead. I spent the weekend working on my fire box and it barely looks any different from when I started! Glad you figured out the wire feed issue. It’s super satisfying when you can troubleshoot something and it ...

Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

Hey guys, I made a lot of progress this weekend! In short, I cleaned up the smoke stack assembly, got the firebox attached, and got the throat cut. The smoke stack assembly came out looking good after it was cleaned up. IMG_1789.jpeg Attaching the firebox was actually quite a simple and painless pro...

Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

Great looking stack setup. Love that fat stack! On the sputtering welder, it looks like you welded over the tank paint. That will definitely cause a lot of spatter and potential porosity. Good news is this isn’t structural welding. I understand the frustration though. I get impatient and weld over ...

Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

Designing the smoke collector I had some trouble deciding on the exact shape of the collector. Specifically I couldn't figure out how to tie the vertical walls of ...

Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

So I spent some time this past weekend making my handles for the CC doors and I am really happy with how they turned out! These handles are made out of some horseshoes that I bought at Tractor Supply and the same tube and rod that I used for my hinges. I started out by cutting the horseshoes. I was ...

You can always use your weld eraser and smoke collector enlarger if it gives you trouble: 3CAD26E1-92D3-48E7-A4F6-36133BF6ADD7.jpeg :bigfoot: I am well acquainted with my weld eraser! Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

I think physics is usually visualized best when you exaggerate the problem in both directions. Your exhaust creates your draw, works like a vacuum cleaner. So picture your exhaust like a vacuum cleaner hose with different ends (collectors) on it. Say you make the one end 3 inches tall instead of 6....

Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

I think it looks fine with 6”. My only concern is that the 6” height may be a bit of an airflow restriction for the 8” pipe. I’ve thought a fair bit about this as this is my preferred stack configuration. As the airflow reaches the back of the collector, it’s getting more and more constricted befor...

Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

Thank you all. I think it is turning out pretty well! I am trying to finalize how I’m going to do the smoke stack assembly and need your advice. I am using an 8” pipe for my stack. I went full science fair project on this one and made it out of poster board to see how it would look on the smoker bef...

Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

I’ll have to consider the door braces. I haven’t used them b/c I’m worried about them hitting my upper row of grates. Thats a good point that I didn't consider because im not planning on installing a top grate. I put the supports in because I really didn't know what i was getting myself into lol. I...

Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

Hinging the doors Hinging the doors was fairly simple. I am using a 1/8" thick gasket and so i bought some washers that were 1/16" thick. I used a grinder to cut them into small pieces and taped 8 of them around the outside of the door and 2 for the door to sit on. AD9D2ACB-3CF6-4DCE-A684-D7AFA7E57...

Okay so I apologize for the delay but i have made some major progress! Burning the tank out I spent a lot of time taking a wire wheel on my grinder to the inside of the ...

Re: First offset build! Have some questions.

Thx Thejm. I still struggle with fit up and surface prep. I’ll get one good bead and the next one looks like garbage. Still a lot to learn. It’s actually a 120 gallon tank. I think the pictures a little bit deceiving. The Stack is 27 inches from the top of the tank, 37 inches from the smoke collect...
