Re: Bi-Metallic Strip

According to what I have researched (and its in the manual). The object is to create a swirling of the smoke through the chamber instead of just straight through. This is really what I am after, I am just wondering if anyone has ever attempted to do anything like this.

Bi-Metallic Strip

Hello,

Does anyone have an information on the "bi-metallic strip" on the franklins new pit? It is suppose to help create a vortex to help 'bathe the meat' in smoke. Sounds like a great idea but how does it work?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give

Id like to know more about this bi-metal design of franklins which is, from what I understand, what makes that pit preform so well.

Wow there is some outstanding work in this thread. Can I ask, for reference, how many gallons is the cook chamber on these? (I am still deciding what size I want to build)

Hybrid Offset And Reverse Flow

Hello, I am curious if anyone has tried a hybrid design that combines an offset with a texas style offset with a reverse flow. I really like this texas style smoker https://www.smokerplans.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=237:b73bfd2c9d9283cf487a10ba956cefdc but on this design hybrid...

Re: Fuel Consumption Between These 2 Pits

Thanks for the responses. Honestly I am just trying to think of the disadvantages of getting this big of a pit. The only one I can really come up with is more fuel but it sounds like that is negligible.

My bad. I was thinking 120 gallon. 30" is the norm. Coffee hadn't kicked in yet.
No problem at all. It seems there are some 172 gallons floating around that have the 24" OD and 250 wall

Re: SmokerBuilder Reverse Flow Plans - Sourcing 24" pipe

Honestly, a 30" cook chamber would be awesome. Could easily get 3 racks in it. I know it's an additional expense but they sell plans for that size pit as well. If you wanted to alter it a bit, you could always cut it down to 36-48 inches long to make it more back yard friendly. This is interesting,...

All the 250gal that I have found are 30" in diameter. I will keep looking

SmokerBuilder Reverse Flow Plans - Sourcing 24" pipe

Hello, I just bought the reverse flowplans from smoker builder and I am ready to build my first smoker. The plans call for a 24" pipe but I cannot find anyone who sells this (thats not 20ft in length). I have plenty of 1/4" plate steel on hand Has anyone built the reverse flow on that site? Where di...

Re: BBQ Trailer - sink ideas

Mine is just an out door kitchen for my house. Just curious if you will be able to feel a difference of 20ga ss reinforced with wood backing for the table top vs the 16ga ss. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. I will build one soon and see if the 20ga ss feels 'cheap'

Re: BBQ Trailer - sink ideas

Thanks for the reply. I have been looking at 20ga with some kind of wood bottom. The price of stainless steel is CRAZY high and the bender goes from ($1500 for 20ga) to $7500 for 16ga

I have never worked with metal that small. I wonder if 20ga would be ok with wood support at the bottom

Re: Double Wall Insulated Smoker (pit and firebox)

Insulating the cook chamber is not always a good idea. A smoker needs to loose certain amount of heat thru the walls as it does not all go up the chimney. Making it too efficient will mean you can’t have a fire any bigger than 3 toothpicks and a Lincoln log. The firebox, on the other hand, is a gre...

Re: Offset smoker and firebox size.

At what point does the FB size calculator not work? According to the calculations I need a 20" round by 14" long FB. That seems small to me and maybe more of a hassle to get wookd in there. I just haven't seen many FB's under 20". Can I go bigger and stay under a certain size differential % or is g...

Re: firebox size longer vs taller vs wider?

Why does the size of the firebox affect the cook? Too small I could see because you couldnt put the right amount of wood/air in but is it a bad thing if you build it oversized? You just dont run as much wood and adjust the door(input air)?

Round vs Octogon Shaped Cook Chambers

I am just curious if there is a reason why most smokers are round. I have access to cheap plate steel.

Is there any reason why smokers are round and not an octagon shape? Will I have problems with an octagon shaped smoker?
