Re: Help Tweak My Design Please

Hello, what is an appropriate size for a ball drain? I am looking at a 3" and found a brass low pressure ball valve for 76 bucks and a 3" pipe for 11 bucks.

What size ball valve would be appropriate for 250gallon smoker? I have read that going too small can cause it to clog up.

Smoker Paint And Finish Options

Hello, It is getting close to time to seal this thing up so I am looking at paint/sealing type options. I saw one that was boiled linseed oil that was outstanding but in my case, the tank (and my welds) have imperfections so I do not thing it will look that great. Has anyone ever tried a truck bed l...

Re: Help Tweak My Design Please

That's a pipe with a round bar inside. Tightens up the wobble a bit, and looks cool at the same time. I did The Cadillac like that. 1/2 inch schedule 80 pipe, 1/2 inch round bar. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51107928560_ca50aa5398_b.jpg That thing is a work of art. What finish is that? My cu...

Re: Consequence of an oversized firebox

You mention moving the fire around the "cooking chamber" Are you referring to the Fire box, or are you actually talking about a chargrill where the fire goes into the cook chamber. No firebox needed for a chargrill. I am not sure why you would want to move the fire around a traditional firebox. i s...

Re: Consequence of an oversized firebox

In my limited research I have found that competition guys will use a bigger firebox, not to run a bigger fire but to give them the option to move the smaller fire around to different parts of the cooking chamber depending on what is needed. Because of this I settled at 125% but I full plan to place ...

Re: Help for adjusting CC doors

That has not been something I have seen. I've burned out 5 so far of different sizes and thickness. Any one else experience warping due to a burn out? I am not sure if the burnout caused it as I also chopped one end of the bell off My tank is out of round. 3-9 o clock is 30 1/8 12-6 o clock is 29 1...

Show Me Your Rack

Hello,

There are a lot of clever people on this forum so let's see pictures of your wood rack. Should it be covered to shield from the rain and snow? How do you store yours?

Re: Help Tweak My Design Please

I should have specified, 1 inch on centers using 1/4" thick rod would be a little more then 1/2" actual spacing. I am still looking for a rod supplier, prices are crazy high right now.

Re: Help Tweak My Design Please

I called around and found that the cheapest would cost 6.4 times the cost of expanded metal. Looks nice but not worth it. What size works best for a grate? This is what I have to choose from but if it is not listed I can get it somewhere else Gauge: #18 Thickness: 0.202" Hole Size: 0.75" Gauge: #13 ...

Where are you guys putting your vents? I wanted to do a double vent (one on the left of the fb and one on the right) so if the wind is acting up that day I can just use one side. Congratulations to you! I am building very similar (250 gallon) but my stack calls for 6" - 36" long. How tall is your stack if you dont mind me asking?

Re: Help Tweak My Design Please

I was also thinking that it might be a good idea, since I have the cap off, to get my fat ass inside the pipe and weld some gussets before I cut the doors. This should keep the spring back down on the doors. Is this a bad idea?

Something like this

I need a little advice if I could from people that are more experienced then myself. Re: If There Was 1 Thing You Could Tell Yourself, What Would It Be?

Im actually right in the middle of building one or at least I have 1. prepped the tank 2. cut the chimney hole 3. removed all the fittings at the top of the tank. 4. cut the endcap (firebox) side off 5. currently wire wheeling the rust off the bottom of the tank. Hopefully tomorrow I can cut the doors

If There Was 1 Thing You Could Tell Yourself, What Would It Be?

Hello,

If you could go back (just before your first build), and tell your old self what you know now. What would it be?

My crystal ball isnt working too good. Is it typical to put tuning places on a 250gallon? How do you know that tuning plates are needed before you build?

Re: Help Tweak My Design Please

I plan on putting the grate at 15" (middle of the 30" CC). I should put the top of the throat at 12"? So far I have found that higher on the throat means hotter/faster cook and lower on the throat means lower temps and slower cooking times.
