Re: 1st Build 100# propane cylinder

Its broke in now. Boston Butt to perfection. Baffle / Tuning plates worked great. 2 degrees across pit. 1/8" shadow plate, 3/16" baffle plate above it. 3/16" 4" wide tuning plates (overlapping 1st section), then spaced appropriately after that.

Re: 1st Build 100# propane cylinder

Gotcha. I had already cut out for stack with door panel 1.25" from it. Hoping not to have that metal strip between the 2 to warp when welding in the stack. So will prolly do series of tack beads on opposire sides to keep from it gettin to hot and pulling.

Re: 1st Build 100# propane cylinder

I like that SheffSmoker. On my tank at the bell weld seam there is an internal 1/4" weir all the way around where the bell was welded on. I would need to grind that down on the bottom so there wouldn't be a division to drain. But would probably need to do that anyway. But unfortunately I just cut th...

Re: 1st Build 100# propane cylinder

Thanks DT and dacoison. I will be putting the stack in the top of the CC by the bell (don't have a 90). Will set it up at top where it wont drip any nasties or particulates on food or grate. Plan on cutting out CC and FB doors tomorrow and weld in stack. Putting pics together to post when gets close...

Re: 1st Build 100# propane cylinder

Update and question. Thanks, paint appears to be coming off without too much work. The silver is a little tougher though. Question. It is time to install the stack today on this small smoker. Was going to do the Franklin smoke collector on the end of it, but my welding is self taught and didnt want ...

Re: 1st Build 100# propane cylinder

I have searched the threads, but still not very clear. My 100# propane cylinder is gray in color with some rust showing. It is an old cylinder. Before I get much further in this build, is this galvanized or just old silver paint. Put a torch to the outside, no colored smoke. Put an old worn flap dis...

Man, I like that. Was at a restaurant a while back that had a large Santa Maria going with steaks and a bucket of garlic herb butter on the side and it was right behind the bar. Was a sweet gig. Got my designer brain tripping, ha

Re: 1st Build 100# propane cylinder

Calculations are right on 100%. Would like a little more percentage though, but all I have. The frame im building will be able to compensate a .25" steel square FB down the road. The 30 pound bottle might be a fail as far as making temps in a 100 pound bottle CC as an RF smoker. Will find out. Might...

Re: Grease Fire

Does it have a shadow plate under the BP by the FB? A couple of members here were telling me on my 1st build to add a shadow plate, that it would help reduce the initial heat on the BP next to the FB.
The slope to the grease drain would also help.

Re: 1st Build 100# propane cylinder

Definitely some good ideas on this board. Was using a 30 pound propane bottle for the FB (all I have). But was going to line the bottom and the top with curved plate cut from another bottle and add the fire grate you suggested (with a basket maybe).

Re: 1st Build 100# propane cylinder

I enjoy retirement piddle. I'm hoping this smoker turns out well. If it does, could start on more to give my sons, but will prolly need to go with thicker material for the firebox for the long haul.

Re: 1st Build 100# propane cylinder

Good time killer for sure. Been tinkering to survive after retirement. Making usable stuff from nothing. Made a timber jack out of some old steel and a stick splitter out of and old axe, flywheel and sone chain. Stick splitter will come in handy for smoker.
