Re: Grill on firebox

I’m also a bit worried the insulated firebox will run to clean of a fire. Would that also apply to just air insulated? Then maybe I won’t box it in but just build a square FB I have a round FB now and still like the V shape, fire runs better, sometimes to good even…… Any ideas you can share with baf...

Re: Calculators

So this seems better.
With firebox intakes, they don’t mean the door I suppose?

Not sure I understand what this should look like.
Anyone have pictures of this?

Re: Thermometer hole

Nice practical idea on the aluminim foil :-)

So you would recommend a gasket?
Okay, I’ll have a look around for that.
Any pointers to what you think works well?

Re: Grill on firebox

Thanks, I currently have 2 grill grates that vorm a V in my round FB. Allows for good airflow around the fire. Think I’ll stick with that. Never used an ash try before, seen some do it. Matbe easier to dump hot coals in the tray and then insert the tray in the FB to start it up? Any opinion on the i...

Calculators

I tried the calculators here, wanted to check how strict these are…… Seems the FB I envision is too big. I prefer bigger FB to move the fire around a little and looks better. 20 inch chimney height feels very very short…..will catch very little wind, right? I plan on putting a collector on grate lev...

Thermometer hole

Really not sure on this one. I see some folks make holes to guide cables for electro thermometer. I currently just close the door on it……sst…don’t tell the Manufacturer….hahaha Feels contra intuitive to drill a hole in something I want to close off to hold the smoke……. Speaking of which, what do you...

Grill on firebox

More questions…..:-) Do you have an opinion on round or square FB? I’m thinking of doing round and then square around that. For a number of reasons. - I like the round as the box for wood placement, coals also come down to the center. - round feels better for fire……based on absolutely no facts, haha...

I see some smokers have a grate that slides out.

What do people use the second grate for on an offset smoker?

Does it really add value?

1 or 2 doors

I’m thinking about the design voor my offset 24x48 inch. I’m contemplating 2 doors. As you don’t really use the first so many inches close to FB anyway. Thought I could put a small door there to remove water pan maybe. Then have a bigger door for the meat. But you don’t see this that often, is there...

Re: Firebox questions

:yth: The size of the throat in a standard offset is not as important as long as it’s at least as big as the calc calls for. Half moon, rectangle, oval, etc probably matters a bit but area matters more. Franklin talks a lot about air flow and not impeding it but his restaurant pits are massive and ...
