Are you glad you swapped?

For those of you who may have gone from standard offset to RF, are you happy with the swap? Do you prefer the traditional offset? What are the benefits of a RF vs standard offsets? I’m considering making mine a RF I’m waiting on a builder to call me back. I already have all the material. I just need...

Leg size

What leg size would you use for a 20x40x3/8 (Cook Chamber)? I am thinking of 1 1/2" square tubing but wondering what thickness metal I should use.

Baffle Plate

What is the distance the baffle plate on a RF needs to be from the bottom of the cook chamber? I am building a 20"x40" smoker. I have some extra plate that I am trying to decide what I can use it for. I can make a 12" wide plate x whatever distance long. At 12" long my measurements placed the plate ...

Collector

What effect does the collector have on your pit when it comes to doing your calculations? I didn't see it in the Pit builder Calculator. How do I factor it in to the build?

Is a collector worth having?

Angled legs

I have noticed some people will angle the legs of their smokers so the bottom of the legs are wider than the top. Now I know there is no set/required/specific angle to these legs but what would be a good angle to mount those?

More I research the more confused it get

I am probably going to annoy you people with random questions. So the more have read on things concerning sizing the firebox to the cook chamber I have noticed people seem to say your FB should be 107%-115% the size of the cook chamber. The more I look around online I see all these different compani...

Re: Too big

It's not that I am wanting to go that big, just more curious how it would effect the smoker. Just more of curiosity I guess.

Too big

Is it possible to have a Firebox too big. For the size smoker I am wanting to build a 20x20x20 is rated to be 110.52%. Would it be too big of a Firebox to make it 24x24x24? The formula, if I remember correct, shows that size (24x24x24) being around 197%.

Thanks,
Michael

Ok. I may go the route you did. I like the way your’s looks. I’m still in the process of getting prices from one other place.

Re: Can't decide so please help me out.

I had some 24 inch pipe that I bought, that I used for the firebox. The cook chamber is 30 inch tank 40 inches long. The firebox is 24 inch pipe, 23 inches long. I may possibly have been able to make the whole thing out of just the tank, if I had done that from the start. It was a several step proc...

Re: Can't decide so please help me out.

Been there, done that: http://smokerbuilder.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=7548 Started out as a 250, but I decided early on it was way too big, so I cut it down. It turned into a 171 gallon, but it used a ton of wood, not sure if the oversized stack had anything to do with that, or not. But it wa...

Re: Can't decide so please help me out.

So I called a semi-local pipe yard today. These are the prices quoted: 20"x32"x3/8" = $125.00 24"x48"x1/4" = $210.00 Great pricing. I'd jump on that 48" if the $$ are in your realm. And if you don't want to use the 250 gallon. BTW, you may end up having so much fun building the 48" pit you go back ...

Re: Can't decide so please help me out.

A 250 gal is a big pit. Probably too big for the backyard family cooker in my opinion. It's also way to big to put on casters so either a solid skid or trailer work best. A whole hog can be a fun experience but, seriously, how often are you going to do it? It's expensive, time consuming and really ...

Bare with me as you read through this. It may be a lot and will most likely will confuse you. I am looking to make this a backyard smoker So, I have a few different options in regards to building a smoker that I will list below. I hope it isn't too confusing. 1) I have access to a free 250 gallon ta...

New here and not sure what I want

I am new to welding but I am ready to learn. I am located near Auburn University. I have always wanted to build my own backyard pit. I can't decide what I want to be honest, in terms of size. So I will probably have a lot of random questions that will cause you guys to think "man this guy has no bus...
