Re: Another Newbie

That's quite the huge throat, thanks for posting that's an interesting pit! Have you tried inverting your blocker device to block the top 1/2 of the throat, Workhorse-style? I found that the meats I produced with such a design had a much more subtle smoke profile which is not what I'm looking for, ...

Re: Another Newbie

I did; I used to have that sheet metal thing I'm now using to cover the bottom half of the exchange as a throat baffle—it's a Workhorse Pits' design, with a 20-30 degree lip pointing downwards. I saw that you used the old WH style baffle as part of the new throat blocker there, but was wondering if...

Re: Another Newbie

Photos?! :-) I haven't really played with throat openings much. I have been mostly left messing with baffles on offsets that had already been built by someone else. That said, on my 20x36 I had to remove the 2" grease dam because it was choking it back. I checked the sq in the calculator and it turn...

Re: Another Newbie

Understood. I feel like with my intent on cooking occasionally for family and friends I think that it’s not going to be a huge deal to lose a few inches of cooking space as I will likely not have the CC maxed out. I just like hearing the ideas and theories. Like Thin Blue said, it’s pretty neat the...

Re: Another Newbie

The next logical question now is: does this design only work on extra-long fireboxes like the 57, 69 and 75? Always going by logic, that design seems to block the line of sight between the fire and the meat to avoid direct radiant heat, as well as move the hot spot just a few inches to the left. In...

Re: Another Newbie

Brewmaster this is why I thought the baffle overlaps the throat opening. I could be wrong and it could just be the angle of the photo though. It can't be all things though... Tacked at the top of the throat, angled downward and not overlap the throat opening. One of those things has to give. ceff2a...

Re: Another Newbie

So do you guys think that this was an intentional design feature or perhaps the guy was just using what he had and didn’t see the need to weld the whole thing? It's just something to redirect the airflow so it just needs to be tacked on, no need to spend the resources on welding the flap solid. You...

Re: Another Newbie

Note there are two gaps on the downward lip, most people miss those; the lip is welded in three points only. I believe there's a 1/4" gap between the plate and the lip where smoke and heat can rise in tiny amounts. When I fabricated the same out of a cookie sheet I ground the slits down with a file...

Re: First build firebox help

Thanks for the replies, that will help me going forward. I like the fire brick idea. The firebricks seemed to help stabilize temperature swings a bit, at least when burning the fire right on the bottom without use of a log/coal grate, (like the rich and famous do, haha) Speaking of which, I grabbed...

Re: First build + vlog

Good video, keep 'em coming! Like you, I'm in the large stack/large firebox camp since most builders seem to be going that way. I once ran different pit builders' numbers through the calculators and found most of their stacks were ~ 6" or so longer than the calculators recommended (rather than "a lo...

Re: First build firebox help

In my opinion, your firebox will be perfectly fine just the size it is. My daily driver offset is same size, but the firebox is even a bit larger at 27" long (chamber is 24x48, firebox is 24x27) I know many think this is so oversized that it'll be nothing but trouble or at very least, a fuel hog, bu...

Re: Throat Opening Placement

at least when combined with the massively over-sized firebox. I think that's one of the keys to that design. Enough space for the air to rise and start swirling before exiting the fb. For sure! Around 4:10 in this video you can see the the smoke is naturally exiting in a swirling motion roughly par...

Re: Throat Opening Placement

After watching that video I can't believe they are asking 3 grand for something still full of manufacturing crap! I wouldn't sleep at night knowing I'd sent out something like that. I agree. You would think they'd spend a couple minutes after it's built and at least take a hand scraper and a broom ...

Re: Throat Opening Placement

Good question! One that I can't answer but I will say that if you look at all the bigger or more sought after (debatable? haha) builders' patio models, they all seem to have fairly common placement of a couple inches below center/grate level, or pretty much at grate level. One slightly odd one out a...

Re: 235 Gallons

Wow that's great, good job re-working all that and adding the extra height to the FB. Super cool that's it's a refurb/upgrade with all that history. The smoker itself is awesome, what a great size for little catering gigs and so on. :points:

Re: 235 Gallons

That's beautiful, man that's an epic firebox, what are the dimensions of this beast, chamber and box? I like it a lot, should be able to get a real even cook chamber with all that firebox length. My current offset has a big firebox and I'm a fan of how even and stable it runs.

Re: 235 Gallons

I had a little hiccup yesterday, and had to cut three of the top supports out and move them. Then redo one grill frame, but I got it all looking acceptable, now. I went and bought a laser level last night, that thing is great! Well, that's a royal pain in the a**! Kudos for taking the time to make ...

Re: Throat location

I'd cut the bottom half of your throat out and weld the top half closed. Most cookers I've seen with the throat entry above the grate always cook real hot up top and too cool down low. I'd also cut out the "shelf" (top of pipe protruding inside atop your throat there) Good luck, she's a real beauty,...
