Re: Got Wood Online?

Anyone have opinions on using red oak? I have a local wood source who is wanting to sell me a load at a real cheap price. I was thinking on using the oak as the warm up fuel source. As always all input is appreciated. Here in California its very popular and highly regarded. I have eaten lots of Tri...

Re: Got Wood Online?

You know I don't know if you all have ever mix Bourbon, I prefer Buffalo Trace, with apple juice, but I love it and find it a refreshing summer drink. I do a double shot in a 12 oz glass of of ice and then pour in apple juice. I discovered its drinking quality when I made the same thing for a spritz...

Re: Got Wood Online?

After visiting with my Dad, it's all coming back to me .... Unless you have access to free cull apples (just fallen off the tree) and a cider press it's more trouble than it's worth. If a fellow could buy fresh pressed apple juice from an orchard or roadside stand - THEN you might have a shot ... a...

Re: Got Wood Online?

I just got done reading the storage requirements that Fruita has on their website and now I'm worried the wood will go bad, before I get to use it all as I don't have a an extra fridge or freezer or enough room in my everyday one for 30lbs. Fruita claims that the woods "life will be shortened to abo...

Re: Got Wood Online?

Well I ordered 15lbs Pecan and 15lbs Peach from Fruita...unfortunately the peach will not be sent until after the 17th, because its on back order. I really look forward to using a combo of pecan and peach in the UDS, something about that combo just sounds like the ticket to awesome Q IMO.

Got Wood Online?

I've been considering purchasing online from Smokinlicious, but the prices seem a bit high to me even before shipping. I have some mesquite and apple chunks from Home Depot, but they are dry as bones and even after soaking, I just don't think its good. Smokinlicious suggests to me that I purchase th...

Re: I've Almost Got all The Parts Together

WoW :biggrillin: shortly after my last reply and elderly lady called me and told me to come pick up her late husbands Weber Grill for free, becaue she will never use it. It was out in the weather quite a bit so the grill grate was rusted up, but I took my wire wheel to it and it looks okay now. I th...

Re: I've Almost Got all The Parts Together

Thanks Rick... I doubt I'll build another until I can find a source for refurbished drums that do not need to be burned out. I really enjoyed building the UDS, but IMO burning out the drum was a real PIA.

Re: I've Almost Got all The Parts Together

Forgot a thermometer probe hole. On my Weber kettle instead of paying $8 for a grommet I went to Home depot and purchased one of those hollow threaded brass tubes like are used in lamps to run a lamp cord through. However, I've gone all out on this UDS build so I'd like to know is there anything inh...

I had to travel to the next town to get the hangers from Lowes, because the nearest one didn't even have them or know what they are.

I will be placing Craiglist add right away.

Re: I've Almost Got all The Parts Together

Okay I've got this sucker built. The only thing is I'm using a fairly long pipe for my intake that has the ball valve long enough that its right at the top of barrel. I need to find a pipe stand off, but when I ask about them at Lowes and Home Depot they look at me like I just told them I the man fr...

Re: I've Almost Got all The Parts Together

So I started burning out this barrel at 6a.m. PST and now at 1p.m. all accept the last bottom third on the outside looks like its all burn out. Is this normal is it anything I should be concerned with. A very good amount of the paint is gone from the top 1/3's is gone and metal is showing if this sa...

I've Almost Got all The Parts Together

I picked up a used food grade drum today for $30 and a friend of mine gave a 13"x56" piece of #9 expanded expanded metal that is not galvanized. The barrel is not lined, but does have paint inside and out. I'm planning to burn it out tomorrow since, all the sandblasters I've found want to charge me ...

Re: Questions on UDS Build

How long of a piece of expanded metal do I need to go around a 16" grate. The grate I'm planning on using is from an ECB and the diameter is actually a little smaller than 16 diameter.

Re: Questions on UDS Build

Hi Guys: I don't no if I mentioned it here before, but not long ago I found an almost new ECB my late fathers shed. So I'm pretty excited as I figure I can use one the grates from it for charcoal grate, and use the handles too in my UDS build which I'm starting to pull the parts for. I already have ...

Re: Questions on UDS Build

Hope you all don't mind me bringing this thread back up. I am not long from likely purchasing Franks full kit however I have one question. I've noticed several UDS that utilize one or two ball valves attached to pipe(s) running up the side of the drum is there any reason not to utilize such a design...
