Re: Baffle plate questions...

Galvanized material is typically hot dipped in zinc... Zinc coated is galvanized so that would be bad stuff in a cooker...

Re: membrane on ribs

On the topic of membrane removal - Does removing the membrane cause the ribs to fall apart if they are being hung from a hook in a vertical smoker? I see the wisdom in removing but always thought the membrane helped keep my ribs from becoming a pile at the bottom of a vertical smoker...

Re: New (to me anyway) Mig Welder

Thanks to TQ I went and swapped my .035 wire for a spool of .030. While out I stopped at Harbor Freight and got a $49 mig cart to set things up and make the rig more mobile... Today I finally got to try my hand at welding and testedth welder out. I bought some 3/4 x 3/4 x 1/8 angle and cut a few sho...

Re: New (to me anyway) Mig Welder

Wow - great advice! It was at least 25 years ago that I did any welding and even then it was a little stick welding doing construction work. Excited to practice a little this weekend.

Re: New (to me anyway) Mig Welder

Thanks - hopefully it will prove to be a reliable machine... I did not get to start testing out my welding skills last weekend. I was out of town all last week on business and did not have time to buy my gas and wire before the weekend. I guess I could have started with flux core but I am hearing fr...

Re: RF Project - Converting 30" Propane Cooker

So I stumbled into some good luck... Through a work connection I was able to get all the 1/4" steel plate cut to size including the 1 1/2 " wide frame for around the door and the door itself along with the intake vents and the vent slider / damper. Everything cut out including materials cost was onl...

Here are a couple pics. Also got my 240 outlet and circuit installed today in the garage so next weekend I should be testing this baby out!

Re: New (to me anyway) Mig Welder

I should add that my wedding experience is minimal and consisted of some construction related welding with a stick welder 20 years ago... Looking forward to developing some new skills during the build.

New (to me anyway) Mig Welder

So I am embarking on my first smoker build and needed to buy my first welder. After reading on here and studying welder types etc. I decided to go with a mig welder. I was planning to buy a new welder at Harbor Freight but found a used Lincoln SP 170T mig welder on Craigslist for $200. I did. Little...

Re: First build

I am also staring my first build and found the following calculator helpful: http://www.feldoncentral.com/bbqcalculator.html I think based on a 250 gallon cooking chamber minimum size for the firebox is more like 75 gallons.... Good luck on the build and I will look forward to following your progres...

Re: RF Project - Converting 30" Propane Cooker

Forgot to mention in the original post: I will be remounting the tank and turning it 90 degrees with the firebox at the rear of the trailer. Also, the trailer is a work in progress, the axle / spindles / wheels are from an old (at least 50's era) Plymouth front end. I will either modify to add sprin...

RF Project - Converting 30" Propane Cooker

So I have been wanting to build a RF smoker for a while now and have actually been watching out for a deal on a propane tank at the right price for a couple months now. On friday I found an add on Craigslist for a "meat roaster", the add did not mention smoker, BBQ, pig, etc... As a result I don't t...
