Re: My smoker/ pig roaster

There will be a rotisserie on top. I will be putting plate steel around the outside. Two doors on one side to move trays of the wood/charcoal up or down (depending on grilling or smoking). I have the top of the tank that I will cut in half and put on top to close it. I will post more pictures as I g...

Re: My smoker/ pig roaster

I hope this gives an idea of what I have in mind. It is going slow though. I don't have nearly as much time to work on it as I hoped I would have. The frame is just tac'd in at this point.

Re: My smoker/ pig roaster

So I have been running crazy busy since before Christmas. About two weeks ago, I was able to start working on this thing again. I am adding about a two foot section to the middle. In that section, I will have two levels where I will have fire boxes that I can slide from side to side. I added angle i...

Re: My smoker/ pig roaster

Well a few updates. I picked up a flux core welder over Thanksgiving. It's not the best, but it will get the job done. It took a few minutes to get the settings right, but I think I'm close. I spent last Saturday evening sitting in bed, watching the Big 10 championship game and designing what I want...

http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/w490/alive226/image-4.jpg Another nice day. I figured I would get some grinding done. In fact I thought why not do the rest of the grinding. http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/w490/alive226/image-5.jpg http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/w490/alive226/image-6.jp...

Re: My smoker/ pig roaster

I tried putting a torch to it for several reasons. To see if it would burn off or at least make it easier to grind off. Also to confirm the tank was not galvanized. It didn't burn off and it didn't make it any easier to grind off (It seemed to make it harder). Thanks for the idea, but I did try it. ...

Re: My smoker/ pig roaster

http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/w490/alive226/IMG_20121111_173830_zpscf2a50c1.jpg So another nice day, even though it was pretty windy. I got in another couple of hours of grinding. I think with the masonry disc, I should only have area hours left. I hope to have it done in the next week. The g...

Re: My smoker/ pig roaster

http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/w490/alive226/IMG_20121110_123950_zpsa884a08d.jpg Well I had a nice day today, so I finished the grinding the one half of the ceramic coating. The somewhat shiny portion is the part I did today. My metal cutting wheel was getting a little small, so I hit the loca...

Re: My smoker/ pig roaster

I spent another 1 1/2 hours the other day and another 2 hours today grinding away. I think I have another 2 hours left on this side (the lid) of grind in and I will bed done. Here are a couple of update pictures. http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/w490/alive226/IMG_20121103_145656_zps7cee7a4a.jpg I...

Re: My smoker/ pig roaster

I checked it with a torch today. No green smoke, only the paint on the other side of the tank burning. I think it might look galvanized to you from the picture, but grinding any steel is going to make it nice and shiny. I tried putting a torch to the ceramic coating, to see if it would make it easie...

Re: My smoker/ pig roaster

I will check to see if it is galvanized, but it doesn't look like it to me. Also, I measured the metal and it is 3/16". I kept forgetting to do so. I might put a torch to the coating, to see if it softens it up and makes the grinding a little easier and faster. Blaster, I will let you know if you ar...

http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/w490/alive226/IMG_20121014_105858_zpsb0b1c978.jpg I started getting the ceramic coating off today. Re: My smoker/ pig roaster

I think it was originally a water tank that someone started using to hold oil or fuel oil.

Re: My smoker/ pig roaster

It is not galvanized, it is just painted grey. I am using a circular saw with a metal cut off blade. I have gone through two blades so far. I'm just taking my time while cutting.

I hope this worked. If so, it is a picture of measuring and marking the line to cut with the laser level.

My smoker/ pig roaster

As I mentioned in my intro, I was lucky enough to come across a 200 gal Culligan water tank, 5" long by 30" diameter, for free. Writing my intro got me motivated. Well I started on it today. I don't have a lot of fancy and expensive tools. So I bought a couple of cut off blades for my circular saw. ...
