Re: Time for a Spring Upgrade

What recommendations does the group have on adding a blower control (BBQ Guru, etc) to a 500gal tank? 1. is there one that works better than the others? (easier to use when self marinating) 2. should I look for a specific CFM 3. can I build one myself? by looking at instructables.com there seem to b...

Re: Time for a Spring Upgrade

finally got time to do my first couple of burns this weekend. Burned red oak and white oak with some wild cherry in there too. First burn seemed to take about 90 minutes to get it all warmed up. that 3/4 plate seems to need some extra time. BUT once it was running, WOW, it was super even temps. Firs...

Wood Smoking Flavor Chart

Found a nice flavor chart online that really looks complete. Looks like someone has compiled a lot of threads into this chart.

Re: Time for a Spring Upgrade

yes, have a 50K propane burner in there as an assist/pre-heat.

Also have another one on the backside hooked up to the turkey fryer.

The burner in the CC is just under the plate so that it warms it nicely. With the plate being 3/4 thick, it can use all the pre-heating it can take.

Re: Time for a Spring Upgrade

Sure, I can do that for you. The lift is something that I am playing with. I will say it is not perfected :) Today it is a pivot point in the front of the tank with a 1" pin, and two plates in the back with pins. the travel at the rear plates has to be 7" to get 15" of clearance at the back of the F...

Re: Time for a Spring Upgrade

Finally got it mounted on the trailer last night. Have some work to do on the trailer itself, but it is rolling now. I also solved my clearance problem too. Adding a hydrolic lift to the back for transport. Then will lower it for cooking. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-c4vERKfBu0U/UXfvdn8KyVI/AA...

Re: Insulating the firebox

well, it was cheaper than buying new steel. I went to the local scrap yard and they had a lot of 1/2, 5/8, 3/4 plate there that was 19 cents per pound vs the 80ish cents for new. I will not have to worry about it rusting out anytime soon. :) Last night had a disaster happen also, when moving the smo...

Re: Insulating the firebox

The ceramic has a much higher temp rating. Frank used mineral wool in the last insulated build for SmokerBuilder's gravity-feed model and I couldn't be happier with that. You really need to use 1/4" no matter what. The heat is just too much for anything less than that. I have personally warped 1/4"...

Sounds like you have some good rework ahead of you. I used the calculator when I designed the 500gal RF that I am just finishing. Found it to be very educational and easy to use for the uneducated.

Share some pics when you get a chance.

Thanks for the link.

You mean everyone does not use the burner to enable automatic door openers? I figured it would make them very light with all that back pressure.

Re: Draft holes

I am planning to put four 5" holes near the bottom of the FB. Two on each side. then have a slider/damper on the outside to close them off. Using the calculator, that should work.

Is there any benefit of doing it any other way? opinions welcome.
