Re: 250 Trailer Smoker

So I have a question for those that have built smokers. I'm getting the angle and 3/4" #9 expanded steel tomorrow to make the six grates, in making the grates do I set them up so the food sits on top the grate and angle or should it sit down in the grate? I certainly hope that question makes sense, ...

Re: 250 Trailer Smoker

So in every minute of my spare time I've been working on all the little odds & ends trying to finish this thing up. I've been taking some pictures, but to be perfectly honest not as often as I'd like. Anyways heres a few more pics to add to the collection. http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff479/T...

Yes pics are good, they kinda help to feed our addiction too.
Good luck with the build.

Re: 250 Trailer Smoker

I was talking with a friend of mine and he said if I cut them loose and move them as high and as far back as possible, it's kinda like moving the axle under the trailer, and should change the hold of the counter weight. Any thoughts on this? Sounded good when he said it, but I lack in the fabricatio...

Re: 250 Trailer Smoker

So after adding as much rebar to the counterweights as possible they stil dont seem to be heavy enough to hold the door open firmly. I can barely give the door a tug (more like a nudge) and it will come slamming down. Any suggestions on how to either increase their weight or simply get them to apply...

Re: 250 Trailer Smoker

So I got a little more work done today, cut and welded in the baffle plate and the drain. http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff479/Tj_Wrangler_SC/Smoker_Build_250/IMG_2013040626269_zps8975c2bc.jpg http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff479/Tj_Wrangler_SC/Smoker_Build_250/IMG_2013040636921_zps7c35758...

Ok, so I've come to the conclusion that anyone against "Child Labor" has obviously never tried using it to their advantage. http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff479/Tj_Wrangler_SC/Smoker_Build_250/IMG950106_zpsf013172c.jpg So this is my 10yr old son who loves nothing more than to mess with a grinde...

Re: 250 Trailer Smoker

Also for those wondering, or if you simply missed it earlier in this thread, that is my shop seen in the last picture. I've pretty much taken over the back yard patio. Just goes to show that even with limited tools and space, a determined person can do pretty much do anything.

Re: 250 Trailer Smoker

Cut up the pipe for the counterweights. Let me say, that was the MOST FRUSTRATING part of this build to date. http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff479/Tj_Wrangler_SC/Smoker_Build_250/IMG_2013040242794_zpsf721483b.jpg I tacked and cut loose only to reposition and tack again simply because things wer...

Re: 250 Trailer Smoker

Well i got to work on the smoker a bit this morning. Made up two hinges that were 6" each for the firebox. Here is a picture of both hinges in place. http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff479/Tj_Wrangler_SC/Smoker_Build_250/IMG_2013033150497_zps26c0b8f6.jpg And here is a closer shot of the top secti...

Re: 250 Trailer Smoker

As promised here is an updated picture of the new height after moving the axle under springs. Just for reference, I put the 12"x3" firebox vent cutout on end beside the firebox. http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff479/Tj_Wrangler_SC/Smoker_Build_250/IMG_2013032759701_zps112d6982.jpg Also got some ...

Re: 250 Trailer Smoker

So I moved the axle under the springs and that raised the firebox enough that I now have 11" clearance on the left (cooker) side. Also got some of the firebox inner parts welded in place. http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff479/Tj_Wrangler_SC/Smoker_Build_250/IMG_2013032652128_zps69c2b1f7.jpg Didn...

Re: 250 Trailer Smoker

I have a 2000lb axle with 2200lb slipper springs. I'm contemplating changing the springs to a 3500 on the tank side just to get it to sit level side to side. With all the welds i would have to cut, raising the cooker off the trailer frame isn't an option at this point. I can move the springs on top ...

Re: 250 Trailer Smoker

I have a few questions for those of you that have done this once or twice before. How do you get the trailer to sit level? (Side to side) And How much ground clearance is sufficient under the firebox to avoid damage in parking lots? The reason I ask is, on the right side of the Firebox I have 8" of ...

The cold wind kept the fresh air going and offset the heat being generated. I just had to have someone keep an eye out for grass fires.

You know just thinking aloud here, and comletely off topic, but am I the only one that anytime I
post something about the size of anything, I try to rephrase what I'm about to say just to avoid the
whole "that's what she said" response?

Re: 250 Trailer Smoker

Got some more work done on the smoker today, finally got the supports done and set the smoker onto the trailer. http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff479/Tj_Wrangler_SC/Smoker_Build_250/IMG_20130319_231956-1_zps09211ec6.jpg Then I started tacking and welding the firebox.
