Re: Sorry...dumb question...purpose of the bottom drain.

I took an 8" sheetrock knife (new) to it and it came up the consistency of thin peanut butter - one pass. I had the whole BP clean in under 30 seconds just wiping my knife on a paper towel. Every few cooks I give the BP a quick scraping which leaves a little behind for "flavor" - works great and th...

Great work all round. This has been a fun build to watch. I'd love to try to mimic it if I had any use for a pit anywhere near that size.

Re: Fully Insulated 500+ Gallon W/ Squared Off Doors on Trai

i know my opinion is about as useful as an a$$hole on an elbow... i actually considered cutting a few bigger holes in the bottom of my FB basket for more of the ash to drop through. i don't mind too much if a handful of coals drop through too, but i like the ash to drop out for sure so the coals are...

use primer or not?

i know, seems like a dumb question... i have read a lot of these paint threads, along with solo's paint thesis, i have not found a definitive answer. so i bought the rustoleum high temp rattle cans to get ready to paint the smoker soon. went to home depot and they don't have high temp primer. two of...

so i smoked a pork butt in this thing last weekend, along with a dozen chicken thighs. it all came out amazing!!! ....but, there are no pics so i guess it didn't really happen. i was able to regulate the temp much better this time. i actually had to cover the stack about 3/4 or more and nearly close...

Re: Wick's first build; 80 gallon RF

I am looking at building one too. How much did that bottle weigh? When I do mine I will have to figure out how to lift it. i have no idea what the tank weighed with no motor on it, but i'd guess around 200+ Lbs. the firebox is a bit over 160 Lbs.the RF BP is about 50 Lbs...so that is already 400 Lb...

Re: Wick's first build; 80 gallon RF

I might have an idea to help with the balance problem. Does it want to drop on the FB end when you try to roll it? If so then buy a plug-in socket type of swivel caster and weld the socket to the bottom of the FB about 2 inches from the door in the center. Then plug in the swivel caster part only w...

Re: best way to cut end of tank off?

i know i'm chiming in late here, but i too did my entire build* with a 15amp milwaukee 4.5" grinder and a pack of harbor freight cutting discs - which is how i also cut the end of the tank to mount the FB. i know, they are cheap discs, but i get a TON of life out of them, if you don't just bury the ...

I like it.....I would like to ask how far does that stack come into the cook chamber? and are your plans to make a solid baffle plate or have you thought about tuning plates? DC he already has a BP in his CC. Re: Can I see pics of your adjustable baffle?

As I recall it was a sliding plate under the open end of the BP connected to a screw drive going out the end of the tank and a wheel on the outside end to turn by hand. Good idea since you can use it to find the cooker's sweet spot.... :D Sweet, that is in line with what I was thinking. I'll look f...

Can I see pics of your adjustable baffle?

Getting ready to start going on my smoker again soon, and been contemplating adding an adjustable plate to end of the RF plate to slide in or out to control air flow. Re: Wick's first build; 80 gallon RF

A shelf on the CC end for a cooler would balance nicely. By the time you're done cooking, the cooler is empty, no more weight needed. then it's lighter to push in the garage. i like the way you think...but my only concern is the size of the cooler you're referring too; my beer coolers are as...

Re: Wick's first build; 80 gallon RF

what thickness is your firebox? 3/8" or 1/4"? I love the progress...I just started my 100 gallon RF build. Just wire-wheeled the tank clean. Not too bad, just time consuming. Good work bud! i appreciate everyone's comments. i used 1/4" plate for the FB. i'll look forward to checking out your build ...

looking good. How bad was it wire brushing the paint off? i need to remove the paint on my build this weekend. wasn't sure wich way to go yet. Wasn't too bad brushing it off. Looks good to me! Reminds me of the first one I built...one thing I will say that I didn't do on mine, is that if your building a rolling cart for it it sit on extend it end to end. I mounted mine on the CC And CC side of the firebox and it turned out being FB heavy and wanting to tip pretty easy. ...

i should mention, some of the metal you see there is to build a welding table, and i'm sure to have go amount of extra material when done as well. starting the firebox. got myself a good priced 89* steel holder from harbor freight. damn that thing is handy http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii257/wi...
