Re: 275 Gal. Fuel Oil Tank Offset Smoker

we used 11 ga. because of weight issues and it does the job well with only slight warping at very high temperatures, but 1/4" would be great. we did have to add bracing to the door.

Re: Tank build need input

I forgot to tell you in my pm to check out the PitCalc . You should be able to do a quick Google search, I forgot the exact url and I'm away from my computer. As far as recovery time, if you're doing the same design I did it shouldn't be a problem. I open mine as much as I want to and it doesn't aff...

Re: 275 Gal. Fuel Oil Tank Offset Smoker

Yeah that sounds about right on sizing. Thanks Puff. By the way, what size hinges and type of gasket did you use? Just curious.

Re: 275 Gal. Fuel Oil Tank Offset Smoker

I'll look them up when I get a chance but basically I just had them cut as big as possible while staying on the flat area and leaving enough room on either side for the hinges and inside rails.

Re: 275 Gal. Fuel Oil Tank Offset Smoker

Yeah 1\4 " would be ideal. Unfortunately for me it is just way too heavy for this size box and would be impractical for a patio unit. Even though this is thinner and not insulated I have never had any problems maintaining perfect temperatures even when it starts pouring down rain or snow. I guess th...

Re: 275 Gal. Fuel Oil Tank Offset Smoker

I believe it is 11 ga. steel. You may want to use something thicker just for the top, or just reinforce the top a little. Mine warps just a bit at higher temps. Not a big problem really but I'm not sure what your design is so I thought I'd let you know. Haven't been on the forum in a while. Are you ...

Re: 275 Gal. Fuel Oil Tank Offset Smoker

Close-ups, test fire run. Just a few finishing touches left and then time to paint! It's cool seeing someone make my ideas come to life. http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a598/smokeinthenoke/First%20Smoker%20Build/2013-04-07125706_zps5572d78b.jpg http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a598/smokeinthe...

Re: 275 Gal. Fuel Oil Tank Offset Smoker

It looks heavier than it is, because everything is really pretty thin. Your doing great! I was wondering though how you may support those racks in the middle, when you load them up they look like they may sag alot. I'm also concerned about those tires next to the fire box. I'm thinking they may get...

Re: 275 Gal. Fuel Oil Tank Offset Smoker

Since it is going to be so heavy, we were having a tough time figuring out the best way I could move it by myself, while taking into consideration the heat around the firebox when in use. I wasn't really sure what to do, thought about just putting legs on it and then using a furniture mover or some ...

Re: 275 Gal. Fuel Oil Tank Offset Smoker

Looks great! you might check the total sq inches of opening for your air inlets tho. Thanks! They are 6" diameter, and there will be 2 more on the firebox door for a total of six, so that should be around 84 sq in of openings which is actually slightly more than necessary. Never hurts to dou...

Re: 275 Gal. Fuel Oil Tank Offset Smoker

By the way, anyone have some ideas for what to put the wood on in the firebox? I've seen some people build baskets out of expanded sheet they can pull in and out or just put in a shelf grate similar to the cooking grate in the smoke chamber. What do ya'll think? It's gonna be a 28" cube firebox with...

Re: 275 Gal. Fuel Oil Tank Offset Smoker

Your doing great, just looking at the holes on the right side of the CC. I'm guessing these are the 2 holes for the stacks, it is my experience and the pit calc. on this site that the size of these holes are a bit small. It will cause some restriction of the flow. Look on the front page of the site...

Oh, It's definitely got me! My plan is to take some welding classes eventually so I can do the next build 100% on my own. Plus I've always thought that could be a useful skill to have.

Rick, can you send me a link to some pics of alleyrat's smoker? I'm always interested in seeing what others have done with the same basic idea.

Re: Smokin' in Roanoke, VA

Rick: Thanks! I am building (with some help) a reverse flow offset out of a 275 gal fuel oil tank. Check out my post in the "First smoker you ever built" thread.

Baffle plate added for reverse flow. It also helped straighten out the tank walls which warped a little when cut. The smoke stack holes were also cut at this point.

275 Gal. Fuel Oil Tank Offset Smoker

I designed the smoker based on the Feldon's pit calculator. http://www.feldoncentral.com/bbqcalculator.html I ordered the latches from kck.com and everything else from bbqequipmentstore.com (both sites have many of the same things, but BBQ Equipment store usually has better prices) Doors in progress...

Next step was to clean it out, cut the door opening (the piece that was cut out for the opening was reused for the doors), burn it out, and remove all that old paint and rust. http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a598/smokeinthenoke/First%20Smoker%20Build/2013-02-16112421_zps292f974e.jpg http://i1285...

Re: 275 Gal. Fuel Oil Tank Offset Smoker

Yes, I have added that into my design. My current cheapo smoker from kmart has major temp problems from one end to the other so reverse flow was a must for this project. Thanks Rod! I've got more pics on the way.
