Cutting door sequence

Wanted to know the best sequence to cutting cooking chamber door into pipe. I guess what I'm saying is. After you cut the top horizontal line, do you cut the bottom horizontal line next or the two side vertical cuts. Which is best for least amount of distortion and spring in the top corners? Thanks ...

Re: Door reshaping

Just to clarify....cut door completely out. Weld flanges all the way on. And then stretch with chain or something similar? Would you still do same process with a 1000 gallon that is nearly 3/8" thick? Thanks again

Re: Door reshaping

With that method, I had thought it wasn't good to remove doors from tank....I thought the process was to weld hinges on before cutting the final cuts on door??

Door reshaping

Hey there, working on a 500 gallon offset, and the doors opened up a bit too much. The way I've corrected them before is by putting 2x4 pine or 2x2 square tubing underneath the door horizontally and using ratchet straps to pull them in. I was nervous that the section in between the doors on the tank...

Door sealant

Hey guys, looking for a certain type of sealant for the CC doors, it's looks like a melted black rubber or some other material. I've seen it on a couple of pits, and its unlike the felt gaskets that are out there. Maybe some kind of black silicone or something similar? Any help you can provide would...

Sprung doors

Hey guys, working on a 1000 gallon offset, and a couple of the doors have sprung a bit too much...sticking out about a 1/4" at the bottom horizontal seam. Seems pretty flush about 2/3rds the way down on the vertical seams. I put heavy ratchet straps on the outside seams to close tight, and put some ...

Counter Weights

Hey guys...when using counter weights on standard round pipe cooking chambers, where is the best location to place them? Toward the top of the door, bottom of the door, or in the middle? Also, when using counter weights, how much weight is needed? The some amount as the door weigh? Last question...w...

Axle Placement Question

Hey guys, building a smoker trailer and not real sure where to put the axle. Generally, you would use the 60/40 percent split, but not sure when having the smoking closer to the rear of the trailer. I am building it similar to how TQ does with the firebox welded into the rear of the trailer deck. th...

Re: RF Smoker Calculations

Well I had a play with the numbers in the pit calc & the best result I posted above, your FB should be 26x28x28 to give you a difference of 108% (which is right where you want it, between 105-110%). The throat area is saying 163.08sqin which, if my calculations are correct, makes the throat about 5...

Re: RF Smoker Calculations

Yeah the area below the baffle plate is considered part of the cook chamber. The throat area should be what is suggested by the pit calc so it will probably be shorter than the 4" you've allowed below the BP. Is that 4" included in the CC height you've mentioned? :kewl: Yes sir, it is included in t...

Re: RF Smoker Calculations

My cooking chamber will be 6 feet long, 28" tall, and 28" deep. From bottom of cooking chamber to baffle plate will be 4 inches. My firebox to CC opening would be 4" tall and as wide as the firebox. What do ya'll think about this? Haven't figured out the firebox dimensions yet because I don't know i...

hey there, bought to purchase some thermometers for my pit, and I see a lot of you like the Tel Tru's, and I have looked at their website, and there are quite a few options. Any advise on the size, degree range, etc. ??? Thanks in advance.

Re: Fire Box Clearance

Thanks for the replies, I was wondering because I kinda designed my build after TQ's style, and his firebox's look really close to the ground in the pics. I guess I will go between 8 and 10 inches....but hate being indecisive about stuff...LOL. Thanks again

Hey TQ, just curious on these cookers, how far is the bottom of the firebox from the ground. It looks pretty close, and also wanted to know if you experienced any issues being that close. Love you work bud. thanks again

One piece??? Are you talking about the frame for the doors?? My original question was about putting the actual sides of the cooking chamber on and how to get them identical on each side.

Hey guys....I am currently building my RF smoker with square doors, which is a copy of TQ's design. Not sure if there is an easy way, but I just want t...

Cutting Cooking Chamber Questions

Hey guys..... I am currently starting my RF trailer build, and I have some questions about cutting apart my tank for the cooking chamber. I am building a square door on a round pipe style smoker. I have already cut the barrel ends off, so I basically have a 53" long piece of 24" pipe. I am planning ...
