Cleaning metal in new build

I am almost done with my vertical smoker build. Do I need to do anything special with the raw steel on the inside? I know I need to season it, but do I need to do anything like cleaning contaminants off of the inside before I cook on it? Thanks!

Re: Looking for springs and caps for 5/8 handle

I could weld them. I just assumed that the springs needed to be free to rotate around the rod. Do you just tack them at the top and bottom when you weld them?

Looking for springs and caps for 5/8 handle

I am working on handles for my vertical smoker build. I have some 5/8" rod I want to bend into handles. I have found a number of 5/8 opening springs, but I can't seem to find caps to hold the spring on the 5/8" rod. Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Propane burner safety question

Thanks for all the comments. I am torn between trying to do propane safely, and using charcoal which just seems a lot more complicated and a lot more work to start, maintain temp, etc. I have only ever used a propane smoker so I was hoping to stick to what I know.

Re: HELP ME WITH MY VERTICAL SMOKER

On the burner with the 3 valves would there be a way to have an external temperature control knob on that or would you have to open the smoker to adjust the 3 valves each time?

Re: Propane burner safety question

So if I design my cabinet smoker with the same type of bottom design that my commercial unit has, would that diminish most of the risk associated with it? Would there be an easy/inexpensive way to add an automatic shut off on the burner if the flame were to go out?

Propane burner safety question

I am in the planning stages of my first smoker build. It is going to be a vertical cabinet smoker to replace a 38" Smoke Hollow propane smoker. I want a unit that works similar to what I have, just larger and with insulated walls. I see a lot of concern on the forum over propane burner safety. My qu...

Re: My DIY vert. box propane smoker

Very nice looking smoker! Are you able to regulate the temperature of the propane burner from the outside, or do you have to open the door and adjust the three valves?

Thanks for the welcome. I'm sure there will plenty of questions before I start building, and lots more during!

Loving the forums. Been smoking for about a year in a cheap vertical propane smoker. I am looking to build a new, larger version soon, and have already gotten a lot of great information from this forum. I look forward to drawing from your collective experience during my build.
