Re: Centre feed reverse flow build (for Metric meat only)

My GF does. Im blazing a trail lol. Rather than having the coals fall onto a plate that has an open bottom and one open side, im having the coals fall into a basket that's open on all sides. I feel that this way more air can flow through into the smoker. If it dosnt work I can always wall it off ins...

Re: Centre feed reverse flow build (for Metric meat only)

Just started making the hanging basket.... Been using a map gas torch to heat the stainless rod up to glowing and then bend it and tap it all straight.

I need 7-8 ribs (not sure how many yet) and after four, the gas ran out. Gonna get more and finish off tomorrow.

Re: Centre feed reverse flow build (for Metric meat only)

I just drew the smoker out to see what it would look like. It looks like a victorian factory. Oh and its nearly 7 feet tall. The charcoal chute is 1250mm long caus thats how wide standard steel sheets are so its very easy to get strips cut that long. The plan is to burn it and if it manages 30 hours...

Re: Centre feed reverse flow build (for Metric meat only)

Hinges are on. It's ugly but it's strong. Some flap wheeling will fix it.

Re: Centre feed reverse flow build (for Metric meat only)

Just spent some time with ratchet straps and wood making sure the door is in the hole properly and it's all straight. I need to go round and stuff a 1mmish shim round to give space for the seal. It's cold and dark now so hinges go on tomorrow. Also got some 8mm stainless rod and stainless tig rod to...

I asked the same question, and down to the fact I couldn't find any lpg tanks, I decided to build a square one, but with a cut off corner to make it look nicer.

Re: Leg thickness

I really need to think before I google sometimes. I just google image searched 'Good penetration' to find some nice useful images. Ewwwwwww. Anyway. Check on the other side of the join, and if the steel has bubbled up a bit (showing the heat has got through to it) that shows good penetration. You ca...

Re: Offset Power Draft

I made a bbq guru thing with an arduino. Easy enough. Used a thermocouple interface chip to read the temp and a MOSFET to switch a fan on and off. Had an LCD screen to read out temp etc.

I found an industrial blower thing that runs on do, worked well enough.

Re: Centre feed reverse flow build (for Metric meat only)

Here's what the hinge will look like. The hinge has to hold the thing flat, as I'm sure is true with lots of smokers. There's a bit of a gap so I'm gonna have to clap the seal tight then weld on, and all four hinges need to be straight obviously. Gonna be quite a faff but should look good once done.

Re: Centre feed reverse flow build (for Metric meat only)

The hinges came for the smoker, but theres one problem...

The bag says 'Made in france' on it. Is that OK?

hahahahahhahahaha.

Re: Offset Power Draft

I've also thought about a super charger... Although if we were using exhaust gas to power it, it would technically be a turbo charger.

What about NOS or oxygen injection? Hahahaja.

Re: Centre feed reverse flow build (for Metric meat only)

Here's a doodle to show my hanging basket system... Rather that allowing air in the bottom only, it allows air in all the way round, in an attempt to get a good strong draw without needing a massive throat opening into the cooking chamber.

Re: Centre feed reverse flow build (for Metric meat only)

Not sure if I will get it going before christmas. I have the very daunting task of making the gravity feed firebox next. I really feel like im kinda on my own with that one caus theres just nothing out there for horizontal smokers. All I can do is make a big version of a stumps type system, but my c...

Re: Centre feed reverse flow build (for Metric meat only)

Hi everyone.

Today I started to weld the door flange on. The welding is not as neat as I'd like but it's not too bad.

Next up are hinges and handles.

Re: Centre feed reverse flow build (for Metric meat only)

Im back now, and im thinking again on what to do next with the smoker. My big question that I cant quite answer is do I insulate it or not. I want to, and I can do it, but its gonna be expensive. The cost of the steel and the insulation adds up to quite a bit, and im not sure i want to spend that mo...

Re: Centre feed reverse flow build (for Metric meat only)

Yeah, I have since modified the layout slightly since the doodle, im going to have the heat opening at the very bottom of the chamber (i guess that the higher the heat has to travel before it gets to the chimney, the easier it will draw) so there will be room for a shadow plate. Im not sure how big ...

I should also point out that this is no longer a centre feed reverse flow, this is now a gravity feed reverse flow... im gonna try and blaze a trail, caus I cant find any offset reverse flow with a stumps style gravity feed... if the gravity feed system dosn't work, il take it off and forget about t...

Re: Centre feed reverse flow build (for Metric meat only)

Got the door cut today. I marked the door, then stuck wooden battens down with double sided tape, I like to follow the wood with the thin cutting disk to get a straight smooth cut. Before I made the final cuts I welded some steel tabs on to stop the door falling inside the cooking chamber. Looks goo...

Re: Centre feed reverse flow build (for Metric meat only)

Thinking of using this for insulation. Seems cheap compared to some other places, am I missing something, will this be suitable?

Thanks,

Pete.
