BTU's Required For A Given Volume Of Cook Space??

Didn't know where to post this question so here it is. I'm wondering if there is a formula or a reference out there that can help me figure this. For example If I have a 120 gallon tank that is 24"x64" including the caps, I want to know what kind of achievable temp range O could have with a 35,000 B...

Re: Insulated Firebox: Does it change the required size?

Ok thanks. That answers my question. I had been eyeballing the HBT/Greasy Hill pits and noticed that the fireboxes look on the small side. Was wondering how much after the fact insulation would help.

Insulated Firebox: Does it change the required size?

I'm wondering if insulating a firebox that is too small can make up for it by minimizing heat loss. Seems like it would, since you won't need as big of a fire with the insulation.
Am I right?

Re: Converting A Big Stickburner To Reverse Flow

OK so I checked the calculator and it looks like I need an 18" pipe. This is a little over what I would need, but since I know I won't be able to get a 16" pipe thats my thought process. Anybody have a thought on running three lengths of 6" pipe? i can get a 19' length of 6" used gas pipe locally fo...

I am sure you will get a few great ideas.
Thanks. I live outside of Pearl River so I'm actually about 30 away from Slidell.

Re: Converting A Big Stickburner To Reverse Flow

Thanks everybody. I will try the pit calcuator to see if that will work. If it will I'm thinking that the exhaust will probably need to be at grate level to make it work right. If I can't find a way to make this work, then I will probably just leave it alone. I can get pipe cheap or possibly even fr...

Converting A Big Stickburner To Reverse Flow

http://i1334.photobucket.com/albums/w649/Q-Dat44/IMAG0356_zpshughuzli.jpg Hello all. First post other than introducing myself. This cooker is 12' long overall. The firebox is 30×30×30 and made of 1/2" steel. The middle is a 30"×7' section of 3/8" steel pipe. The upright box is made of 1/4" steel an...

Hello From South Louisiana

Hello everyone. I'm Jason. Been making BBQ for a long time now. I'm looking to get more knowledge on the pit building side of things. This looks like the place to learn!

I'll be starting a thread to get advice on a reverse flow conversion I would like to do.
