Re: New reverse flow build

I wish i cauld have found a slightly larger CC. The wife asked yesterday why i was looking at compressor tanks on ebay and i couldnt lie, i said i was already thinking about the next build. She said "you still havent finished this one yet, and what are you going to do with the first one"? Haha! The...

Re: Firebox size confusion

You have run into the same issue many have, when building a smoker with a relatively short cooking chamber, while using the same diameter pipe for the firebox.

Sometimes rectangular fireboxes can be more adaptable, because they can be made narrower, while maintaining the desired length and height.

Re: Top down style offset design help

A hundred years later... for those who don’t have anything better to do. I built quite a few like the one pictured here. No side firebox, but had a partition that separated the charcoal from the meat. Total length 30”, cooking area 22”, depth 18”, height was either 16” or 18” a not sure which. They ...

Re: What To Build...

Gizmo built a square cooker with a rear mounted FB, it had a baffle plate that ran full width from the back wall to just short of the front wall with the stack mounted on the back wall. I'll try to find that build and I'll post a link if I do. Thanks! I was thinking along those lines, but cylindric...

Re: What To Build...

Yep, that is quite a lot of steel to work with, really, and there are so many choices. I am intrigued by the idea of gravity-fed, but have read many reviews of various cookers saying the smoke flavor is kinda weak. On the other hand, I have built an insulated reverse flow cabinet style charcoal smok...

What To Build...

Howdy! I need help getting off the mark. I have one 42”x30” tank section One 4’x8’x1/4” plate One 4’x8’x1/8” sheet And a couple of 30”x30” pieces of 1/4 and 1/8. (Possible bottom and top for cylindrical vertical) Originally, the 1/4” plate was to become the firebox for the tank, as a horizontal offs...

Re: Looking for some advice.

If you can control your fire via air inlets, you shouldn’t have to use baffles to keep the temp under control. Did you build an offset firebox, or did you set the lighthouse on top of the firebox? Or was it an integral part of the lighthouse? Any pics of the completed project? And most importantly, ...

Re: Another noob wants to build a vertical smoker... from an ATM safe

Did you do it? I will come take the worthless old safe off your hands and dispose of it properly for you. Seriously, I would think that would make a fine smoker for you. And seriously, I would take the safe off your hands and build a smoker out of it. At the very least, you could build it like a squ...

Re: Problem with insulated cabinet smoker

I figured it out! The water pan was either too big or too close to the firebox. I cut it out and it works great now! I am interested in your solution. Are you saying there is now no water pan or deflector plate? ...or did you move it away from the fire? Do you feel that it was restricting the air f...

Re: Yet another newbie build

3/16" will last for years, if you keep the firebox painted (or oiled), and you don't let water/wet ash sit in the bottom. It seems like ash is a moisture magnet.
In Florida, you certainly won't have a problem with frigid temps robbing you of heat.

Re: Yet another newbie build

So I have another question. Has anyone made a firebox in the standard fashion but made the boor side slide out. So what I mean is the fire box is 5 panels welded solid. The side with the door has a door cut out but is able to slide completely off of the fire box. I'd do angle on three sides fully w...

Re: Yet another newbie build

How is the planning/building coming along? In Houston, I can buy a sheet of 10 ga for about $50, or a sheet of 1/4 for $100, and the fb will take slightly less than that. Considering how small a percentage the extra 50 is of the overall value of your pit, there is no reason to go with thinner materi...

Odd Llittle Pit

I was asked about this little pit in another thread, and rather than hijack that one, I thought I'd just post a new one. The size of this pit was inspired by an old aluminum grill I remember as a kid. It is 28" wide, 18" deep front to back, and 16" high. The grate height is 7" from the bottom, leavi...

Plans schmanz! Use the pit calculator on this site. Square can be advantageous, especially if you will have multiple racks in the horizontal...

Re: New life into a old smoker

Interesting choice on the firebox dimensions. You won't be able to use 18" splits. I guess you have a source for chunk firewood, or are you going to cut up the splits? The dimension is the width, or diameter. You can get a lower profile by using an online circle calculator to determine how much the ...

For others considerindg a propane tank this year: If you get a good fire going in the propane tank after you cut out the doors, the paint flakes off, and if you spray it with water, the paint flies off. ...but, plate is pretty cheap right now. I have bought 1/4" plate, 4'x8' for 99.00 recently, and ...
