Re: My build

Here's my question - how big should the fire basket be? The box is 29 wide x 23 x 23. Should the basket be as big as will fit or is that overkill?

Re: plasma vs oxy acetylene

My vote is plasma...I've had a torch for 20 years and recently discovered plasma. If I have any precision cutting to do I call a buddy of mine that has a plasma.

Re: Gotta be a compromise ?

It's kinda like having a crescent wrench. It works ok as a wrench and ok as a hammer, which is terrific if that's all you have...but if you have the right (ok, purpose built ) tool for the job the crescent wrench stays in the tool box.

My build

This is my project so far. I started last week with my son who was on leave between USAF basic training/tech school and shipping out to Okinawa Japan for a two year tour. He flew out Wednesday so I'll have to finish up on my own. The tank is a 180 gallon water softener that came from the hospital I ...

Re: throat question

For clarification: The Throat opening is the firebox to cook chamber opening. The baffle plate or reverse flow gap is the at the end of the baffle plate where the heat/smoke enters the upper cook chamber. I thought the baffle plate gap was the throat, so I had that wrong. Just to be sure I have it ...

throat question

How important is it (or is it even necessary) to match up the fire box opening to the throat size? I have a 180 gallon tank and should have a 122" throat...I've got that figured out (after a 2nd try) and wonder if it's worth the hassle of matching up the firebox opening under the BP. That opening fi...

Re: Gallary

My tank is an old water softener barrel from the hospital I work at...I figure it has the 'standard flanged and dish' end and it figures to 181 gallons flooded volume. That same tank with 'hemispherical' heads (which I figure most propane tanks are) would figure to be 229 gallons...darn near a 50 ga...

Re: Gallary

30" x 48" looks to be ~150 gallons. http://planetcalc.com/4579/ I had to go back and measure my tank again...it's 30 x 55. I found a calculator that figures volume of the end cap volumes too. It's found at this link. http://www.samuelpressurevesselgroup.com/en/toolbox/pages/head-volume-calculator.a...

Re: Gallary

I have a 'free' barrel - 30" x 48" that figures to be 180 gallons. I'm thinking it won't be anything special but am always looking for something to make it original or just take advantage of other's unique and cool things. Right now I think a bottle opener is pretty trick.

I'm weeding through post looking for ideas and thought it would be nice if there was a gallery to place all the photo's. All the info is great - I was just hoping to find a quicker way to see different designs/looks. What do you think?
