need help with #'s from pit calculator

here are the numbers: Link to BBQ Pit Calculator my opening will be in the shape of a half moon so how would you calculate its area. and on the fire box vent opening are these numbers telling me that a 4.5 in diameter opening is too small? thanks for your imput.

since most of your wood will be cut at 24in. it seems to me having a box atleast that long could save a lot of trouble In cutting wood to fit. i suppose you have to weigh that vs efficiency loss if a smaller fire box is recommended per the calculator.
