Re: Italian sausage

Man, that sounds good, thank you. I just looked at it again. The sausage is about 1"or so in dia and has two large skewers through it to hold it in a coil The lable says to heat untill the internal temp is 160 deg. so I'm assuming it's raw. I'm definitly going to try with the peppers and onion. I di...

Italian sausage

Good day, I have the brisket, pork butt, ribs and chilli planned for Super Bowl, but I also have an Italian sausage coil that needs to be cooked. It's about 12 inches in dia, I don't know how long it would be if uncoiled. I don't even know if it's pork, just assuming. How would I cook this thing? I'...

Re: New guy needs advice

I checked out the Fabrication how-to's section and found posts by Clover Ridge and Rodcrafter that showed me the light on door latches. I'll just need to borrow a torch to heat the rod for bending and get some handles.

Re: New guy needs advice

I finally had a couple of days off and got some work done on the smoker. I got the CC door cut out anmd the flanges welded on. The side flanges are 1/4" and the top and bottom 3/16' strap. As suggested, I will place the gasket material and strap it on before I weld on hinges. Since my welds don't lo...

Re: starting a weld

Thank you,
I changed the polarity when I switched the wire from flux core.
I will try slowing down the wire feed and shortening the amount protruding.

Re: starting a weld

Thanks for the replies. It's a Lincoln 220 volt 180. I ground and sanded the door surface clean and the holes are fresh drilled. I put the ground clamp on a sanded off surface. Tip and wire are both 0.035". I have the gas set at the recomended level. I thought I had the nozzel clean of spatter but? ...

starting a weld

I welded flanges to my CC door through holes drilled into the flanges. When starting to weld the gun, wire , arc,? I got a POP, POP, POP-POP then the welding buzz. Next hole same thing, POP POP then buzz and filled the hole.I have the wire protruding a little further out of the gun to reach the bott...

Re: Blind, spot, hidden welds?

I got the side flanges welded. Seems using a grinder is an art form as well, I gouged the straps while grinding off the welds and had to clean it up with a sanding disc.
I almost wish I left the welds proud, sorta looked a little like hot rivets similar to a steel trestle bridge or a boiler.

Re: Magnifying hood glass.

Thank you, I bought three, 0.25 power apart. I know the power of my reading glasses but they fit in front of my eyes and the hood lens fits in front of my nose. I tried two of them while doing test welds and they worked well. I can see more than I could wearing my reading glasses under the hood. Loo...

Re: Blind, spot, hidden welds?

I kept the gun verticle on that one, one on right I had on an angle and pushed the weld out.
Upper right in the other pic was my highest heat setting, melted a lot of metal and left a dimple when cooled.
I appreciate the help, if I didn't have it I would be looking in "how to weld "books for hours.

S-6/L-56

Good morning.
All the stores I've visited looking for wire sell two pound rolls of Lincoln S-6 and 12 pound rolls of L-56. Is there a noticable difference in the two wires? The two pound rolls are more money per pound than the 12 pound rolls but is the wire the same quality?

Re: Blind, spot, hidden welds?

Thank you. It's a 240 volt Lincoln 180 HD. I think I'll try a test weld on scrap. I'm not too sure what it's supposed to look like on the underside of the welds. Most I've made so far are blue/black on the backside of the weld. When you say burn thru do you mean burning right through the door metal ...

Blind, spot, hidden welds?

Good day, I'm new to welding. I am in the process of puting the flanges on the door of a reverse flow smoker. I thought if I drilled holes in the flange and welded the flange to the door via the holes, I could then grind off the top of the flange and have a cleaner looking door with no welds showing...

Re: New guy needs advice

Good tips, I was going to build without a gasket but now not sure. I know the door will leak some smoke but does it matter? Do you use round rope gasket such as the type used on wood stoves or flat tape gasket? So does the top and bottom flat bar get welded all the way across to fill the gap?I was p...

Re: New guy needs advice

Well I got up at three yesterday morning and welded up the FB [I think I'm getting too excited about this]then went out and cleared out a third of my woodshed and moved the tank in there to cut. I cut off the FB opening and the two vertical cuts on the CC door. I was planning to use two straps that ...

Re: New guy needs advice

Thanks for the advice, Man, this is taking some time. Not having enough tools or a shop, plus all the mistakes I've been making. I can weld in my garage with the door open but have to do the grinding and cutting outside. Have the bike and part of the car interior in the garage so can't have stuff fl...

Magnifying hood glass.

Good morning,
I'm just getting into welding. I have to use reading glasses and I see there are magnifying lenses for hoods. Is it better to use these or to keep putting the glasses on and off?

Re: New guy needs advice

No sandbagging. The arched channel is part of the brackets used to hold propane tanks under the bed of trucks. A friend gave them to me. They were bent and twisted so I cut off as much as I thought I could use. Then I welded them to some straight channel with some flat plate. Now that I've got the t...

Re: New guy needs advice

Thanks, I have gathered up a bunch of scrape steel for this build. I priced out some steel for a firebox and the racks and it was over $400 that is for a 16" birebox and 36" racks. I think I will use what I have then buy what I need after all the old stuff is gone. I have a piece of 3/8" large enoug...

Re: New guy needs advice

Thanks, I'll try to get some 1/4 inch plate, I may have to buy some, everything else I have is free scrap. I've determined what I need for a firebox to cc opening. But I'm still unsure as to how high to put it. I would assume the meat tray would be at the widest part of the tank to have the most squ...

Re: New guy needs advice

Once again, thanks. I managed to get enough time to cut the bungs and fittings off the tank, I didn't blow up. Quite a pain as the tank came off a truck and all the fittings were at a 45 degree angle. I have some rather large holes. The tag welded on the tank said 58.5 imperial gallons which convert...
