Re: Bkndsdl's Insulated Hybrid

I fixed my duh yesterday. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee106/Bkndsdl/Snapbucket/4EC64753-5D0D-465C-A711-5B0FBA0B7053_zpstcnl0zl9.jpg Laid out the 3/8" plate. This is the divider between the firebox and the vertical smoke chamber, basically the top of the firebox. http://i235.photobucket.com/al...

Re: Bkndsdl's Insulated Hybrid

Made my first duh.....I only needed to notch one side of the two bottom inside FB plates, and I notched both sides. Oh well, easy fix. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee106/Bkndsdl/Snapbucket/22C708DB-B3F7-4AD3-9AED-72FA437DB6F4_zpsfn1bllek.jpg I made progress on the frame for the vertical. My ta...

Re: Bkndsdl's Insulated Hybrid

I was able to get some stuff done tonight, my small group session at church got cancelled so I got to it as soon as I got home. First thing I got done was to make the inner firebox and smoke chamber for the vertical smoker. I had to cut these in two so I had a separate piece above and below the 3/8"...

Re: Bkndsdl's Insulated Hybrid

I got all the tubing cut up. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee106/Bkndsdl/Snapbucket/5cac89d2-6356-43e5-b3af-5b8de9f592b5_zps66347d01.jpg I wasn't able to get any more done because when I picked up my steel Friday it was all palletized and neatly stacked; when I got it all unpacked I realized th...

Re: Bkndsdl's Insulated Hybrid

Got some material, finally! Local steel supplier had shear and plasma cutting capability, so I had them cut up the first plate. Very pleased with price and quality. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee106/Bkndsdl/Snapbucket/9B5D3438-D5C5-481E-81EA-DA3449D40572_zpsbkxcui1t.jpg Set up a simple stop t...

Re: Bkndsdl's Insulated Hybrid

lol......you guys are something else. Here's my intake design. the bottom of the fb will be open in this area. The two sides of the lower protrusion will have a slide for the intake. the bottom of this protrusion will be removeable, facilitating ash removal. The 45 degree plates inside the fb are my...

Re: Bkndsdl's Insulated Hybrid

This image shows just how awesome this software is; plate nesting. I can draw a 5x10 sheet of plate, then lay all the parts and pieces on it so as to utilize as much of the plate as possible.....saves a ton of time and money. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee106/Bkndsdl/smoker4_zpsea65161c.jpg

Re: Bkndsdl's Insulated Hybrid

Here is my design layout. This was done in SketchUp. It's pretty easy to use; I am an AutoCAD operator by trade and I was pretty surprised at the versatility of this free software. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee106/Bkndsdl/smoker1_zps07a9e09f.jpg The pink box in the bottom is what my recommen...

Re: Bkndsdl's Insulated Hybrid

Just FYI, my current trailer smoker is all 1/8" steel. That was a huge mistake on my part. It was my first build and I never knew about this site. The firebox is all kinds of warped and it doesn't hold heat worth a crap. If I get rained on for 5 minutes, I'm screwed. noxcuse, thank you for your inp...

Re: Bkndsdl's Insulated Hybrid

I don't want to sound like a downer but that sure is thin. I'm not sure about the thickness of material you are wanting to use. I would never do as much work as this requires using thin stuff like that. But hey you might teach me something. I understand your concern, I had my doubts at first. I've ...

Re: Bkndsdl's Insulated Hybrid

Here's a top down view of the fb and cabinet divider. It's a 1/4" plate with two slots cut in each side; this is where the heat/smoke from the fire come into the cabinet. When in cabinet mode these will be open; in cc mode, the holes will be covered up. The hole in the center is for a water pan; it ...

Re: Bkndsdl's Insulated Hybrid

Lots of calcs........I am an AutoCAD operator by trade, but unfortunately I do not require AutoCAD at my present job. So I have to go back to the drawing board......literally. Here's the initial concept (VERY rough draft). http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee106/Bkndsdl/8105169c-0a9c-4412-8c64-b313...

Bkndsdl's Insulated Hybrid

After scouring this and other smoking sites, building a few smokers for myself (check my sig line), I've decided it's time to build a smoker that'll do all that I want. I am going to merge several builds into one. I want an insulated fb, tuneable cc, and a rf cabinet. My plan is to merge these three...

Re: Horizontal/vertical combo?

You should start your own thread and keep posting pics so we can follow your build. Welcome to the crew, I hope we can help you along the way. Thanks Rodcrafter, I will! If you start a new thread in the building section and give it a name, I will grab your post and moved it to your new build thread...

Re: Horizontal/vertical combo?

I think on my next one, I will keep the chambers separate, (though still attached) and make the bottom 25% of the vertical, it's own Firefox. Seems it would make temp control more efficient, and increase versatility. I am in the process of building that exact thing, Brisket Envy. Here are a few rou...
