Re: How to run a gravity feed??

Smokerbuild: I am getting 248 and 250 between the top rack and the bottom rack. I am running a water pan. The ball valve is 3/4 open or so. I have a fan providing air to the valve. We both agree that th 40 degree difference you have is too much, but for the life of me, I can’t come up with a good re...

Re: How to run a gravity feed??

I’ll go and get some temps for you now. I’m smoking some spares.

The 2 ounces is total amount of wood. I put a piece or two in the ash box. Two small pieces of cherry.

Re: How to run a gravity feed??

Hi Smokerbuild, I have used a water pan, and I think the results are better. This is my 3rd one. I built this one slightly different than Frank's plan. Are you using the natural draft only of this smoker? Or is a fan involved? With only 10" between the upper and lower grill that 40 degrees seems lik...

Re: Gravity fed plans - overall size

Eeny, I have built both the mini and Franks original design. These are my thoughts, other peoples thoughts may differ! There is not a lot of difference in build time. Each piece must be measured and then cut. The lengh of the welds differ is all. The mini was an easy one man build. The big cabinet w...

So if you convert this all to inches, will your metric pigs fit in the smoker?

Re: Tim's gravity feed (mini)

Tim, I wrapped the FBA on my BUGF smoker. Puff insulated the walls by using expanded metal on the inside. I like his method better. I will use it on my build.

Re: SmokinDTown Mini GF Build

The CC as it is has the back and both sides sheared and broke into a channel -the web and legs are one piece. I welded the top to the channel, then welded that to the left side of the frame. I then welded the uprights into the frame on the right side, to match up with the sheetmetal. I then welded i...

Re: SmokinDTown Mini GF Build

RichB, this stuff, the ceramic insulation, cuts easy, and you can pull it apart. I was using some leftover 2" stuff. I got to work on the Mini a little more today. As far as temps go in FarNorCal, let's just say I'm too far from the beach to get any relief: http://i1341.photobucket.com/albums/o743/d...

Re: Cal Smoke's Mini Gravity Fed Build

Looks like the 1/4" plate is costing you over 350 dollars for the materials plus the shear cut. If my math is correct, (many times it's not!) the 48x96 sheet is a 12" wide by 32' long strip equivalent. Buying a 10" wide 20 footer should save you a ton of money on this order. A 10" wide by 20' flat s...

Thanks, guys. All these builds are looking good! I'm using the ceramic fiber insulation in the tubing as well for the rest of the insulation.

SmokinDTown Mini GF Build

I got going on my Mini build today. Cut out a bunch of tubing. Twice. You know, cut it twice and it was still too short? Anyway, I have lots of company here, and looks like a bunch of good ideas! I went to Airgas last week and asked them if they had "cheaters" for my helmet. Yes, they did. And in 2....

Re: Help me decide...

California Smoke,
Also: this is important: you are buying 4 foot long sheets. Up here, they sell you an 8 footer, shear it to 4 foot, charge for the cut too. Are you asking for your rems?

Re: Help me decide...

California Smoke, Looks like they are charging you 30 dollars a cut when they shear. Probably that's because they have to stop what they are doing, and are charging you accordingly. I can buy for about 80-=90 cents a pound. So this go round, I had some cuts made to the drawings, went through guys in...

Puff,
Started the coals at 4:30 am. Put the meat on at 7 am. It was done 5:30. Internal temp was 197. Came out great!

I had coals left in the chute.
