Re: Cal Smoke's Mini Gravity Fed Build

I think the removable pan is a very nice idea. I'm not cleaning my gf after every use. I figure it's great seasoning with each use up to a point . Between the dripping and the ash dust, cleaning the base will get to be a tough job if left alone too long. Being able to remove the pan and blast it wi...

I don't understand what this accessory is for. I see the swing out grill, and the rotisserie, and the hooks -- is this a fancy drip pan or something more like a swing-away skillet?

Re: Cal Smoke's Mini Gravity Fed Build

I re-made my removable drip pan this afternoon. I cut it just 1/4" shorter (side-to-side) and bent it the same way. It fits just right. Added a front and back. Next I'll drill a hole through the drip pan and the bottom of the smoker at the same time so the drain hole will line up just right. I'll ma...

Re: Cal Smoke's Mini Gravity Fed Build

I just ordered the pipe pieces I need for the drain and firebox air vent from McMaster so I won't get stuck on that next weekend. Hopefully it will cool off, it's almost October dammit!

Re: Cal Smoke's Mini Gravity Fed Build

Hi Puff, no it's just cold rolled 16 gauge. It looks nicer than the hot rolled stuff with the mill scale. The steel place gave it to me for the same price as hot rolled, and I prefer it. I bead blasted the plate pieces before I welded them to remove the worst of the mill scale.

Re: Cal Smoke's Mini Gravity Fed Build

First try on the drip pan -- I'm about 1/4" too long for it to fit right. I think I'll re-make it, should have bent a test strip first. Once I get one bent properly I'll weld on a front and back, then drill the hole for the drain tube. But it's 90 in the shop already. https://mcglynnonmaking.files.w...

Re: Cal Smoke's Mini Gravity Fed Build

I got my cook chamber fit to the tubing yesterday before it got too hot to work any more. It's not perfect, but it's good enough. It's a nice snug fit around the tubing where the door will go, and reasonably good everywhere else. https://mcglynnonmaking.files.wordpress.com/2015/09/img_3124.jpg I cut...

Re: Atama's vertical cabinet build

I'd push the casters out personally. Also, it looks like you have four swivel casters -- that's going to be harder to steer than if two of the were rigid. I did that once on a router table I built and it was a pain. You could push it in and direction, which was handy at times but awkward too. Maybe ...

Re: Tim's gravity feed (mini)

Tim, I just noticed that you welded a coupler to the side of your ash box instead of the pipe nipple itself -- great idea, that probably made it much easier to get the FB in place that if you'd welded the pipe directly to the assembly.

Re: Tim's gravity feed (mini)

Tim, looking really good! What did you do at opening where the smoke transfer tube comes into the cook chamber? (your second picture) It looks like you added an inner skin between the cook chamber and the firebox assembly (good idea). How did you weld around the smoke transfer tube where it joins to...

Re: Cal Smoke's Mini Gravity Fed Build

Puff, I have a brake, so that's what I used to bend. Like I said, I'm not positive this is the best approach so far. It saves welding, and I'm really close on sizing, but reserving judgement until I get the CC slid all the way home. My plan is, once the CC will slide in, to layout and cut a rectangu...

Re: 22 x 18 single pan gravity feed material list?

Yes, you need 1/4 and 1/2" plate. Not much 1/2". I had 1/2 x 6" CR flat bar in the shop already. You need 2 @ 5" x 6", 1 @ 5" x 9" and 1 @ 2.5" x 9" -- roughly 1 square foot of material I think. You need more 1/4" plate, about 6 or 7 square feet (not allowing for cutting/waste). You certainly don't ...

Re: Cal Smoke's Mini Gravity Fed Build

I welded up the cook chamber and test fit it to the tubing frame. I'm really close on the fit, a little more tweaking and it should slide the rest of the way in. I'm not sure how much I gained by bending and welding it outside of the tubing as I'm spending a lot of time fiddling to get a good fit wi...

Re: Cal Smoke's Mini Gravity Fed Build

I got the sheetmetal for the cook chamber bent and tack welded today. I decided to try bending one piece for the back and sides, and welding in a top and bottom. I got the bend in the right place, and made sure the top and bottom were dead square, so I should be OK on the final fit. I'm going to TIG...

Re: Cal Smoke's Mini Gravity Fed Build

Yesterday I fixed my old Black & Decker electric shear. It died several years ago (after not all that much use), I diagnosed that it had a bad switch and ordered a replacement. Apparently the don't make the switch anymore so what I actually got was a different switch, and a new outside case (in DeWa...

Nice looking cooker. How even is the temperature from side to side and top to bottom? Is the cook chamber insulated at all?

Any construction pics?

Re: Cal Smoke's Mini Gravity Fed Build

So I finished welding the smoke transfer tube yesterday. That assembly is now officially H E A V Y. I haven't put the grate into the smoke transfer tube yet (to keep the coals from spilling into the cook chamber), and I'm a little concerned about that part of the assembly. Since it's right against t...

Re: Cal Smoke's Mini Gravity Fed Build

This is coming out very nicely. Not only did my channel come in 3/8 " too long but I've read a few posts about the same thing. Wonder in we are not constructing or placing the firebox correctly? Thanks Puff. On the length of the smoke channel -- mine was a tiny bit long because after building it I ...

Dinner... Country style ribs, smoked a couple of hours to 150* then panned them with pineapple juice and bbq sauce until 180-185*, then back on the grate with bbq sauce to glaze. Smoked mac-n-cheese with panko-bacon crust. And ya gotta have a veggie (or so I'm told). https://mcglynnonmaking.files.wo...

Re: Cal Smoke's Mini Gravity Fed Build

It was cooler today, got a couple of hours in the shop between errands. Also making country ribs and smoked mac-n-cheese for dinner. The plans call for a 9" channel for the smoke transfer tube. Since I had 1.4" plate I decided to just make this instead of using channel -- I think s worked out better...

Re: Cal Smoke's Mini Gravity Fed Build

Puff - yeah, a double-bent drip pan that was removable. Probably with that front edge built in. It would also make it easier to cover in aluminum foil, so cleanup would just be replacing the foil. I'd keep the drain tube of course, just match up the hole in the drip pan, ideally with a little lip in...

Re: Cal Smoke's Mini Gravity Fed Build

It's been unreasonably hot here this week, and I'm waiting for a replacement switch for my hand shear, so no progress on the tin work for the smoker. But I've been thinking about it... Originally I was going to cut and bend one piece for the left and right sides and back -- a giant "U". This would s...

Re: Tim's gravity feed (mini)

Have not made much progress this past week. Getting kids ready for school. Just wondering how everyone is lighting the gravity feed smokers? Suspect a torch would be the easiest way. I was trying to think of some kind of built in igniter. Thanks in advance. Tim My thinking was to get maybe half a c...
