Re: Where to buy the Insulation

I found it thru Zoro it was about half price of everywhere else and you can get it in perfect 1.5" thick size with free shipping as well. I dont have the link saved but I do know they have it, might have to find the part number thru roxul

Re: Tim's gravity feed (mini)

well, when you can spread bacon out to the extreme corners of the cooking grate and it cooks evenly it proves that it is working fine. I would say get the longest stem on the thermometer you can and bias the mounting position toward the bottom of the top shelf so it wont hit your food. Maybe the tra...

Re: Baker's mini GF build

I only had one chimney of lump charcoal and I didn't know how long that would last so I added a chimney of briquettes to the charcoal chute. I used a weed burner for about two minutes to light the coal from the ash box. I left the ash door open for about 30 min. then closed it and ran with the ball...

Re: Build thread, mini gravity fed smoker.

Yes I did run it with the IQ, works great now. I found it needs to set on "Max blow mode" this will eliminate the constant on-off of the fan and only runs it full power or no power. It will now totally run on its own, and recovers in no time. I initially had issues with the IQ blowing enough air to ...

Re: Tim's gravity feed (mini)

I have been using a controller on mine lately and love it, leave ball valve wide open and thats it. but I have found in some experimentation that the cook chamber varies alot in temp, the door thermometer will read alot lower than what the center of the chamber actually is, by the tune of 50 degrees...

Re: Baker's mini GF build

I just drilled a hole in the door where that dimple is.. Its for the emergency exit pushrod. The reason I didnt grind it is because I didnt want to get a bunch of nasty shavings inside of the latch mechanism and have to clean it out.

Re: Build thread, mini gravity fed smoker.

Thanks everybody its been a fun project! I have found the thermometer on the door does read about 50 lower than the middle of the center rack. I was doing a little testing while cooking chicken the other day, but I will put a disclaimer in there saying this was only a 1.5 hr cook and the longer I le...

Re: Build thread, mini gravity fed smoker.

Well, got the 2nd smoker finished"ish" it is at least able to cook food.. This one has a few more trinkets on it. Put a little guard over the temp gauge on the front. 3.5" exhaust tube I simply cut a angle into and welded it on concentric with the bung. also used a chunk of aluminum angle to make a ...

Re: Baker's mini GF build

Oh crap Im sorry I just now actually read your post! Yeah this wont help your problem, I used a long stem 4" thermometer to reach in there. but you could use 3.5" tubing from the exterior wall to the interior wall, drill 3.5" hole in exterior skin and weld the bung on the interior skin. Issue being ...

Re: Baker's mini GF build

I just took a short chunk of 3.5" tube I had laying around and cut a little angle on it. There is a 1/2"npt weld on bung to screw the gauge into. http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg178/427fogger/20151229_222157_zpszukidqhs.jpg http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg178/427fogger/20151228_182503_zpsh...

Re: Build thread, mini gravity fed smoker.

Oh and we weighed the bare smoker, it was 470lbs with no paint and missing a couple small parts. So its safe to say these are 480-500 lbs cook ready, maybe a smidge over that loaded with food and charcoal!

Re: Build thread, mini gravity fed smoker.

Thanks a bunch guys! Really looking forward to getting the 2nd one finished up pretty soon here. The rivets are actually countersunk head so all the holes have been drilled and countersunk after that. Theres quite a few there to do! but there are a few on the smokers we didnt countersink deep enough...

Re: Build thread, mini gravity fed smoker.

We lit about 1/3 of a chimney of charcoal and dumped it right into the chute, then put a little more on top of the lit charcoal. Initially we shut all the doors and was just waiting for it to come to temp, about 20 minutes in the temp was around 150 and we decided to give it a little boost so opened...

Re: Build thread, mini gravity fed smoker.

We fired it up last night and got it broke in. Sprayed the whole thing down "inside of it" with cooking oil and got it up to 300, then settled it in at 275 or so for a few hours. Works great with just the ball valve to control temp, I was very impressed how well it responded to adjustments and held ...

Re: Build thread, mini gravity fed smoker.

Found some time to get a little bit of body work in the shop over the last week here. After a good sanding of the panels I filled in all the rivets and corners with body filler, and yes there was many moments I was wondering if all this body work was going to be a waste of time for a smoker but the ...

Re: Another Mini Gravity Feed

From what I understand that damper is there mainly to block rain from getting in and you run it wide open while cooking. I plan on making a rain deflector to go over mine while in use and a cap for storage.

Re: Build thread, mini gravity fed smoker.

Scottyk, Are these 2x4 sheets of Roxul RHT 80? How thick and do you get them 6 to a box? And finally, if you don't mind, about how much each. I ask because I'm looking to see if the place I get them is reasonable. Delivered... 1 box of 6, 2" thick is around 60.00. The shipping kills the deal at $36...

Re: Build thread, mini gravity fed smoker.

And yes the insulation is a little overkill around the charcoal chute, but on another note we ordered the roxul thru Zoro, and the prices are great and shipping is super fast. So we ended up buying extra "I will update with the Qty later" so figured might as well start insulating everything!

Re: Build thread, mini gravity fed smoker.

Have some small updates to share, work has slowed a little on the smokers. Family life is getting busy lately! but they should be completed this year with a little bit of luck. Riveting the panels on is proving to be more work than anticipated, we are drilling and countersinking each hole, then remo...

I think it is the firewall at my work that will not allow me access to see that website for some reason. If you could email them that would be awesome! crashst78@msn.com
