Re: updates on my first build and a couple questions

Thanks a lot guys! I'll try that with the fire basket. I think it will help a lot. Might have to build a new one anyway though...my current one does not allow for easy ash removal... For the tuning plates, what do you mean by adjusting them? Any recommended positioning in the CC? They'll be 1/4 inch...

Re: updates on my first build and a couple questions

Thanks! First cook was the day it got out there, I couldn't wait any longer. I seasoned it that early afternoon . Towards the end of the seasoning process I threw 2 burgers in the smoker for a quick dinner, didn't want to let that heat go to waste! Then the next day did a pulled pork and some ribs. ...

Re: updates on my first build and a couple questions

And here she is in all her glory ! IMG_20160611_172522.jpg Took 4 of us to lift it out of a van, down a (way too) tight basement staircase with 90 degree turn, then through the basement to my backyard...but it made it! Here's a view from inside the firebox. IMG_20160608_215400.jpg And there you have...

Re: updates on my first build and a couple questions

This post has been too long coming! I got so lost in too much work in April & May and in all my off time was in the welding studio working on the smoker. And finally, two weeks ago she got done! Nonetheless, here are my progress photos sped up from where we left off to June 11th. Here's my last 2 mo...

Anything Wrong with Rustoleum??

Hey guys, I'm about ready to paint my new offset smoker, finishing up the last touches in the shop tonight. I was hoping to paint it this weekend. I've read through most of these paint threads and I see a lot of recommendations for things other than Rustoleum. I was just wondering, is there anything...

Re: updates on my first build and a couple questions

Hey guys, Thanks a lot for the advice. Rodcrafter, to explain the door better: It should go on the side of the smoker. just above grate level and probably 32" long. I was considering actually placing the hinges of the door at the top of the smoker, so when it opens all the way the door could 'rest' ...

updates on my first build and a couple questions

Hey guys! Been a long time since I've sent an update. Been trying to find as much time as possible to make it into the metal studio. Still been perusing the forums for ideas and advice. Great stuff on this site! It's almost too much, I get lost in these discussions... I'll post some photos in a minu...

Re: Newbie Questions on my first build

Pete, Thank you so much for the advice. I really appreciate it! I'll do exactly that and install a shelf for the tuning plates to rest on. In the future. I probably have enough steel for one. I'll aim to make it about that size. How high above the throat should I set the tuning plates? Or should the...

Re: Newbie Questions on my first build

Pete, Thanks so much for the detailed reply. And thanks a ton for checking my numbers. Man, I'm an idiot. :headwall: :headwall: :headwall: I checked those numbers a few times, but didn't set it to square rectangular cc (I was originally building a cylinder), and thus calculated my FB to that. Really...

Re: Newbie Questions on my first build

Hey guys, Finally getting rolling. Finished up some smoker blueprints in Sketchup, got my materials at the local steel yard and started welding this weekend...I'll upload photos from my phone in the following post of my progress (it doesn't seem to be working from my computer). Anywho, I've been dig...

Re: Newbie Questions on my first build

Thanks a lot for the tips fellas! I think I'll change up my blueprints and make it a rectangular CC. Would also save me some bucks as I wouldn't have to commission the cylinder from an outside entity.

Well, I'll get to it! Once I've got some progress I'll post up some pics.

Cheers!

Newbie Questions on my first build

Hey folks, I joined the forum a few weeks ago. What an incredible resource! Thanks to all of you who keep this site up, really impressed. I've been digging through many topics over the past many days in search of inspiration, ideas, advice, etc. for my first build. I live in Brooklyn, NY and am luck...
