Re: My reverse flow build (spent under $50)

Last night while smoking chicken I couldn't get the chamber past 220* or so. So today I cut out the plate I put in the firebox, I think it was blocking the heat and draft. I fired up a test fire (large one) and get the chamber up to 310* no problem. So I took another piece of 1/4 steel and placed it...

Re: baffle plate gap?

Thanks, I just made a piece of 1/4 inch steel with the rounded end that will fit up against the end of the tank. I can now cut a few different sizes of 1/4 and see how long or short the pit likes it then weld it in when done. Thank you again.

baffle plate gap?

How do I figure the right baffle plate gap for my set up? My CC is 43x14, FB is 22x12, I have a 3" exhaust that is roughly 17" long, I have 2 3" pipes from the FB to CC. My plate now has a 6" gap at the end is this too large? How do I figure out how big it needs to be?

Re: My reverse flow build (spent under $50)

Just took chicken off, it took about 2.5 hours to cook the pit was between 210-230. I think that my firebox damper is too small so I will open it up some more tomorrow to see if I can get a little more heat. Plus I think the hickory I was using was a little green and not putting out enough BTU. Here...

Re: My reverse flow build (spent under $50)

Since I added the plate in FB temps wont go over 240*, it sits around 220-225*. I don't know if my old temp gauge on the door is accurate I think I need a new one. I can hear the fat sizzling from the chicken juices hitting the RF plate.

Re: RF plate temps?

I know my welds are probably the worst in the world but I couldn't see where I was welding so I just zapped it the best I could. It has stopped the flames from entering the cooking chamber.

Re: RF plate temps?

Well I did this today, its in the firebox. im cooking right now I still see 420 degrees where the heat comes up and about 280-290 at the plate opening into the cooking chamber. Can someone get a heat reading on their pit for me to see others? http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w304/saleen9973/201602...

Re: My reverse flow build (spent under $50)

I just built a coal basket and welded in the plate in the firebox to keep the flames out of the cooking chamber. Wow my weld suck!!!! I had a real hard time getting in there to weld it and I couldn't see where I was welding what a bad job I hope it holds. http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w304/sale...

Re: My reverse flow build (spent under $50)

The firebox door latch is a old metal tool box latch I just grinded off the rivets from the toolbox and then welded it on the firebox. Hey it was free I had it already then I just put a bolt on it in case it got real hot so I don't burn my fingers.

Re: RF plate temps?

The two 3" pipes go right up to the cooking chamber and probably hit the plate. I could make a deflector plate in the firebox like you said, that way I am just getting heat not flames hitting the plate. What would happen if I add another piece of 1/4 inch steel where the two pipes come up from the f...

Re: RF plate temps?

I built a large fire to season it today and I bet I put food on too soon. This was only the second fire in this pit. its a small pit measures 17x43, firebox is 12x22. tomorrow I will give more time to get a bed of coals and let it settle I think I was rushing it maybe?

RF plate temps?

Guys what kind of temps are you getting on your RF plates? By the firebox and by the opening? Today on my new build I was seeing 450 right at the firebox opening with a large fire and 268 at the end where the opening is. Is this normal? I put a pizza on the smoker today and in 20 minutes I burned th...

Tomorrow I am going to try to smoke some chicken thighs. I will let you guys know how it goes. I can get my hands on a 250lb fat propane tank for free maybe this summer I will try to build one on a trailer.

Re: My reverse flow build (spent under $50)

I am by no means a fabricator :welder: but hey I built it in a few days. Plus the last two days the high temp was 20 degrees, no heat in my little shed.

My goal was to build it for less than $50 bucks, and I did with stuff I had and stuff I got for free. There are more pics in reverse flow builds.

My reverse flow build (spent under $50)

My old charbroils firebox burnt out so I decided to build a reverse flow offset from stuff I had and a meger $50 budget. I found a 100lb propane tank last year in a field, I had 2 1olb grill tanks, my friend gave me some old 1/4 inch plate, I had some expanded metal from my fire pit, some 3" exhaust...
