Stove Black?

I've seen a couple of people recomend using stove black to refurbish an old smoker. I was curious if anyone on here has used it as the primary coat and color for a new smoker. I thought it might be a unique look that would offer a kind of patina to the finish while still protecting the steel. I thin...

Re: Third door witha goose neck hinge

Thanks for the input guys. The hood mounts are a bit heavy duty for this because the piece is only about 12" wide. Ended up welding bolts to the inside of the piece and drilling a hole through the flange using wingnuts to secure it. Since it will only be taken off a handful of times a year when we d...

Third door witha goose neck hinge

I have a 6ft CC with 2 doors. I went with 2 doors because well it's big and I thought it would help with heat retention. Along with that I decided to make the center column between the doors removable so that it would be easier to cook hogs on. I kind of settled on using a goose neck style hinge tha...

Re: Therms- Dial vs. Digital

Thanks guys! Lots of good points. I'm sure I'll end up putting them in. Planning to have our first fire in it next weekend.

Built in cooler

Going to put a storage box on the back side of the cooker. Anyone on here ever built a SS cooler that would fit into a storage box? Thought it would be nice for hauling whole hogs and filling with bevs at an event. I'm thinking of something that could be dropped in.

Therms- Dial vs. Digital

So I plan on using a combo of digital therms for the pit once completed. In comps we used to use a backyard Peoria and used a digital system. I dont know if I'd ever get away from using digital for the preciseness of it and the long range. If the cooker is locked in and has the same temps top to bot...

Re: Lessons Learned

I've been doing a couple days a week after the kids go to bed and then for 3-4 hours one day on the weekend. Flowers and dates..flowers and dates. Don't get me wrong I'm including that in the smoker costs. :welder:

Lessons Learned

This is my first time doing this. I've learned how to hide the $50 here or there for steel. I've learned to hide new tools.
I'm still working on how to hide shop time...

Re: Insulated Firebox size

I'm still learning but I think if you reduce the size of the FB you are missing the point of the insulation. The point of the insulation (IMO) is to make the firebox more efficient. If you insulate a firebox it will be more efficient but if it's too small for your cook chamber you wont have the righ...

Re: Long Time, First Time

Thanks guys. I'll probably start a build thread and show some progress pictures along with some questions. We are putting in some unique features that I've never seen on a cooker so I'm curious about some of the feedback.

Long Time, First Time

Hi All, I'm Jeff. bbq teammate and I have been competing since 2008 and cooking on an off-set since 2011. I decided I wanted a new cooker this off-season and when I looked at the size I wanted and cost I figured we'd just learn how to weld and do it ourselves..since I read Franklin's book (I'm an ex...
