Re: Build Question

For me, welding and grinding all the seams of the sheet was the biggest time consumption. If I had access to someone with the talent to brake all the cook chamber pieces and outside skin so I could assemble most of it with self tapping screws I would give it a try myself. Re: RE: Re: Just putting the question out there... Mini GF build

Michael303 how did that work for you? Did you get any issues with smoke not getting to all of the cc? Have you got any pics of yours.. OK let me clarify that any pics of your smokestack on the side? It's opposite the fire box so smoke coverage is fine. Here's my build thread with pics: http://smoke...

Re: Just putting the question out there... Mini GF build

I moved mine to the side opposite the fire box. No chance of dripping on the food there.

Re: Michael303's Modified Mini Build

I would say no unless you're making it significantly larger. With my controller attached I can get it up to 350 no problem.

Re: Michael303's Modified Mini Build

The size was just adjusted to match the changed over all height of the cooler. Since I only used 1/4" steel and had it plasma cut I was able to combine a few of the pieces too.

Re: BBQ GUru CyberQ

I run the Pit Viper fan with a HeaterMeter and 1.5" pipe on my smoker. Once it's up to temp the fan only runs at 5-10% to maintain temp so I'd say it's more than enough. The 1.5" tube too.

Here's how mine is set up and it's pretty low profile. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160711/ed1a2e1ccfd37464497a3fbb861756d7.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160711/7adbdebf481590eb72d07cfe42fd0713.jpg If you're running a controller with a fan you probably don't even need a ball valve. How Hot Does Your Gravity Feed Get?

I'm interested in hearing how hot the outside of everyone's insulated smokers get and how hot you run it. I typically cook at 275 and I've only cooked twice on it now but I was a little surprised at how hot the outside surfaces of mine get. I use a digital smoker controller and monitor temperatures ...

Re: My Mini Build

I've only run my newly built mini twice now, both with my controller, and it gets it up to temp very fast that way. The first time I started the charcoal in a chimney then dumped it in the chute which worked well enough but I got hot ash all over and burned the door seals a bit and had to clean up t...

Re: Michael303's Modified Mini Build

Seasoned it at 350 degrees on Saturday then cooked some pork overnight that was ready Sunday afternoon. My heatermeter setup easily got it up to 350 then I backed down and cooked the pork at 250 and the entire time it would hold the temp within 2 degrees either way. Next time I'll grab a screenshot ...

Re: Michael303's Modified Mini Build

Thanks for the kind words. Are you going to put a drip ledge on the inside of the door to direct the grease back into your drain pan? :LG: I realized I left that off after getting it in the back yard. I'll probably add it this week. FYI, Here's the drain pan. I'd simplify is design next time though....

Re: Michael303's Modified Mini Build

We're pretty much done with fab. Maybe some minor tweaks. Welding and grinding all the outer skin seams sucked and took way longer than I expected. If I do another one, and I hope to, I'll find a pan brake and bend tabs on the outer skin and use self drilling screws. Something similar for the cook c...

Re: Paint for Insulated Gravity Feed?

Thanks a bunch for all the feedback. I think I'll try high temp paint on the curbs around the ash box and charcoal chute.

I didn't know you could roll on a hammer finish paint. I'll have to look into that.

Paint for Insulated Gravity Feed?

I'm getting to the point that I'm starting to think about painting my GF build. I'm not sure whether I need a high temp paint for the areas adjacent to the charcoal chute and ash box though. Do I need to do just the curbs or do the doors and some area around the curb need high temp paint too? What k...

Hey what's the red stuff you used to fill around the curb of the charcoal chute? Some kind of auto body putty?

Re: Michael303's Modified Mini Build

A few more pics from this weekend. Got all the frame assembled and started on the skin. Also ran some coal through the fire box out of curiosity. Got really hot and it handled it like a champ. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160523/5696a96c2aaa95edfb9d304f50f2c24b.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.c...

Re: Michael303's Modified Mini Build

I've got a little over $500 into project materials and parts so far. Just have the 16ga sheet metal left to be made. Hopefully I'll be under $800 by the end.

I'll be putting my Webber Smokey Mountain on Craigs List soon so I should recoup some from that.
