Re: 20x36 Reverse Flow - First Time Build

I leather sleeve just a few inches wide wrapped around the counterweight's posts could be cool. Wish I knew someone that worked with leather...

Re: 20x36 Reverse Flow - First Time Build

Interesting point but I'm not sure how it could be eliminated completely unless I put a stop to keep the lid from opening all the way. It is easy one handed operation now, but the operator will have to keep their hand on it to keep it from slamming. Maybe the range of motion is to large?

Re: 20x36 Reverse Flow - First Time Build

So after a long break from smoker building I've finally gotten a little more work done. I got a counter weight on it which leads me to a design question: Does anybody put a bumper of any kind between the backside of the counterweight and the cook chamber wall in order to reduce banging noise and/or ...

Re: 20x36 Reverse Flow - First Time Build

Turns out I just had the nut cranked down too tight on the hinge bolts, I loosened those up and the lid swings free and easy.

Re: 20x36 Reverse Flow - First Time Build

I finally got around to working on the smoker again, got the cc door flange welded to the door, hinges on, door mounted. http://i.imgur.com/gZCDQAY.jpg http://i.imgur.com/OGLqxOD.jpg The hinges must be a little off kilter, the door binds when it is open past 12 oclock and isn't able to fall all the ...

Thank You!
Sorry I just now saw this question. It's something like 1/8" thickness, hss4x4.

Re: Reverse flow smoker build

Very cool hinges! I saw those in a pellet smoker at the local grill store and tried to emulate them my self. I modeled it but couldn't figure a way to make it work with the thickness of my CC walls.

Re: 20x36 Reverse Flow - First Time Build

Got it bent back (mostly) I'm planning on using 2" x 1/8" strap for the outside of my door flange with some 1/8" nomex gasket, how *exact* do I need to get the lid back into shape? http://imgur.com/TUtkCx1.jpg http://imgur.com/9oqIPmK.jpg I also got some other odds and ends done. http://imgur.com/KP...

I'm sorry if you've already answered this but I was wondering what you used for your blower connection? A pipe nipple? If so what size?

Re: 20x36 Reverse Flow - First Time Build

Wow that's a neat video, Pete. I guess it does look like the air/smoke flow just goes straight to the top with the middle (grate level) being relatively stagnant. Maybe that's just the right amount of flow? Have you experimented with moving the exhaust around?

Re: Ole Red - 60Gal Air Compressor RF Build

If one is so inclined they could try a "heatermeter" set up, you can tune the PID for your cooker and switch out the blower for a servo that just opens and closes your intake vent. I've thought about trying that after I get my rig together but I can't help think there wouldn't be much point since I'...

Re: 20x36 Reverse Flow - First Time Build

So what is it that sold you on going with the top edge? A few things, mainly I trust these guys here know the hell they're talking about! Anyone who's commented on the subject has suggested putting it at the top, no one has been in favor of leaving it at grate level. I did try and go back and find ...

Re: 20x36 Reverse Flow - First Time Build

:LG: That firebasket looks even better than the drawings. I like it a lot. Are you planning to mount it a couple of inches above the botom of the firebox to allow the ash to build up without interfering with your air flow? Yes sir I'm going to put in some angles as slide rails for the firebasket at...

Re: 20x36 Reverse Flow - First Time Build

Thank you much for the tip, Gizmo! I've read in at least a couple other threads where those folks had better overall heat distribution with a center positioned stack. I remember one particular thread that a fella actually cut his stack off the top and moved it to center and it improved the performan...

Re: 20x36 Reverse Flow - First Time Build

I'm going with hinge #2. I've drawn it up in CAD and attached a PDF so that I could share it if anyone else wants to use it in the future. It's suitable for a 20" OD cook chamber with 2" or less wide flange on the door and 3/16" gasket material. I hope... The idea is that you can print this drawing ...

Will do!

I'm taking votes on hinge profile shape. It goes from mouse ears to toucans ... or maybe telephones. I'm leaning toward the second from the left. I'm also open to any other suggestions or ideas

Re: 20x36 Reverse Flow - First Time Build

Thanks fellas. I also drew up some simple hinges for the cc http://i.imgur.com/jbdhpm5.png This has got me thinking about what to do about my gasket situation. I understand that a hinge on the cc door is necessary, but what's everyone's experience with gaskets vs no gasket on just the fb door? (Spea...
