Re: FB Vent to Grate Height

Sketchup can be run in your browser. It's easy to learn and pretty intuitive.

Librecad is simple 2d cad that's pretty easy that runs in linux. It works but I don't think it's under development anymore.

You could check out freecad but it's relatively complicated.

Re: Door Problem!! Major Warping

This seems like a stupid question before I ask it but how big was the fire? The rest of your fb is insulated, right? What about the door panel? It wouldn't think it would need much fire... either way that's a lot of warping, I'm surprised the added angle didn't fix it. That channel ought to do the t...

Post #1 implies first build, correct? I'd grade this a solid 75... Out of a scale of 1-10! Y'all knocked it out of the park! Those hinges are really interesting... you got my wheels spinning now. I had the same plan with installing mounting brackets with bolt holes instead of permanently welding it ...

Re: Collector

I just did some quick napkin math for some perspective. 24" dia x 48" cc, with a 8" tall triangle shaped collector that spans the diameter of the cc adds something like 5% volume to the cc. Not sure but that seems like a big collector too.

Easy enough to pull out some coals if needed. I wont argue against the convenience of having a warmer box!

Dirtytires, I get your point. I would have to recalibrate to read true. I understand that I need to work with temps under 250. Thank you for the input. We talking about bbq or recalibrating your thermometer? If it's cooking then I humbly disagree! On a separate note my stack baffle parts showed up ...

Re: Couple Questions

IRT averting over heating It just occurred to me to mention my firebasket hangs on pullout slides. If I need to I can just pull the part of the fire or the whole fire outside of the firebox.

Re: Couple Questions

I don't have the experience to answer your questions but I will say that I've just about convinced myself that I'm going to make a grilling insert that goes right above the firebox throat within the cook chamber. Here's where I got the idea. They claim to get temps up to 700F of a normal sized smoki...

Re: New Firebox Concept

If you made an insulated firebox, and each wall had a few ribs (thinking like a torsion box), could you get away with 1/8 for the inside wall?

I know I'm late to the party but wanted to add to McBroom's comment: Lowe's sells 30% white vinegar that will strip that galvanizing off in a jiffy (few hours)! Just don't forget your ppe and maybe hold your breath.

Re: 60 Gallon RF w/ Insulated Firebox

I see you're using 1" insulation. Is that a common choice for insulated fireboxes? From what I can tell the mfrs tend to use 2", is that correct?

Also, 1/4" for both inner and outer skins? Do you think you could have gotten away with something lighter on the outside skin?

Re: New Firebox Concept

So let's scratch this idea. What about drawing in at the top of the outside of the firebox and channeling it down before entering the inside of the fb at the bottom? This would avoid wind/weather issues and preheat the air a bit. As long as the channel is large enough would this still present any ai...

That's a whole lot of inlets!! Be sure to check the calculators, you won't need but just a few of those.

I like your hinge idea. I'd consider an ash pan that slides in and out instead of having to sweep it out.

Re: More I research the more confused it get

Just to clarify the firebox should be about 1/3 cc then add 5 to 10%. So 35 to 37% of cc. You're right, looking at the Texas 1845 the fb is 50% of the cc. I can't comment on who's right or who's wrong. Folks on this forum have been getting along really well with the rules of thumbs posted above. I'd...

Re: Rolled Plate Cook Chambers

Yeah, my last build was out of 3/8" and it sprung out a good 3/4" if not more. That sure was a pain to fix. I was hoping a rolled sheet would be at least less likely to spring. I wonder if I could at least cut out nice radiuses corners to the door(s) on the cnc, roll it, then slap a straight edge on...

Rolled Plate Cook Chambers

Can anyone share their experience getting plate rolled for a cc instead of using pipe? How much $$ are we looking at to get a 24"dia x 48" rolled? Can you precut the doors out of the sheet before getting it rolled? At least partially cut out and maybe leaving a few tabs to finish cutting out the doo...

I just stumbled onto outlaw bbq smokers. It looks like they've copied the jambo design. Here's a look at their fb throat/baffle. They also don't have the throat at the top of the fb.
