Re: My UDS build

Got some more done on the UDS today. This material is the skeleton of what's left of a sheet of 310 stainless. Normally it would be scrap, but I got ahold of it now. I'm going to use this stuff for the cooking grates on my big reverse flow I'm building also. It's 14" tall and 12" square with a 2" ga...

Re: My UDS build

It looks like you're off to a great start. I've seen some of the guys building the FB out of a metal 5 gallon bucket. They cut it off shorter and put a grate about 3 or 4 inches off of the bottom and drill a bunch of large holes in the upper section. You add a handle and you have a FB and ash pan a...

My UDS build

Even before I got my current 18" WSM I wanted to build a UDS. I work at a chemical plant so I'm around drums every day. I talked to my boss recently and we were able to get our drum supplier to pick out some heavier walled drums and throw them on the truck after blasting. Yeah I guess it's cheating ...

Re: Reverse flow smoker build "DELUXE"

Very nice. I'm liking the fire brick idea a lot. Is there any reason you didn't put them on the top, or "ceiling" of the FB?

Re: The Swine Furnace

That looks like several UDSs right there. Making memories! Yes sir buddy. Working at a chemical plant means we get a shipment of drums almost weekly. We got them to send us some freshly blasted and unpainted. I got the 30 gallon drums with intentions of cutting them down and using the bottoms of th...

Re: Fauxstrami and ribs

Another early spring bonus day up here! Supposed to be 70 degrees Saturday. St. Patrick's Day is over but marked down corned beef briskets are still around. I picked up 2 flats for fauxstrami and have them soaking. Decided they'd look so lonely in the smoker so I went to Costco and picked up a pack...

Re: The Swine Furnace

Great find on the trailer. I never am around when those kind of deals come along! What's funny is usually I'm not either. Most project I attemp to start get haulted due to lack of funds or tools or time or some sort of hiccup. This one though, it's kinda like everything keeps falling into my lap. T...

Re: The Swine Furnace

Definitely a good score with the trailer. you seem to be juggling quite few projects there. Yeah I tend to have more irons in the fire than I can tend to. I'm not in a big rush with the big smoker though. I am still mainly in the parts aquiring phase. I work on it when I can. I want to build a uds ...

Re: The Swine Furnace

That was a pretty good find, most of the cheap trailers are junk. It's got a little rust but nothing beyond surface really. If I had some channel or tube sitting around I might could have built one for similar price but I had no materials and was looking at $5-600 after it was all said and done to ...

Re: The Swine Furnace

I have seen rigs with the FB in the front. Gizmo did a very nice job on his. He made it so the tongue of the trailer moved out of the way. He could walk all the way around it nicely. Making memories! I think I can make this work well. The FB will be up in the narrow part of the trailer so it should...

Re: The Swine Furnace

Nice score today! Cruising CL and stumbled upon this gem. Frame is 2x3, has leafs, and both tires are in great shape. Needs a little tlc, (new wiring and lights, a new hitch mount) but the base is there. I think I did pretty good for $200. I'll sand it down and paint it of course and cut the sign fr...

Re: The Swine Furnace

Right now I'm leaning more towards cutting it off completely and capping it. Then doing an 8" square stack out of the top. If you do decide to go with a square stack, bear in mind that due to the turbulence in the corners, An 8" square stack has less volume than an 8" round stack, so it will have t...

Re: The Swine Furnace

Hi I like the start you have here. This is exactly how my build got started. A guy at work dropped of this well tank next to our scrap bin and as soon as I saw it I thought - hey that could be my new smoker..... I was wondering if you plan to modify the stands so that the whole rig is lower? Not su...

Welcome! As you have probably seen, this place is like a smoker building virtual library. So much knowledge and information. I joined recently and have received a ton of helpful advice for my current build and have quite a few ideas and plans for future builds. Post up pictures when you get started!

Re: Reverse flow smoker build

Thanks What I'm hoping for is efficiency. I have no idea how it will burn but I'm making every effort to make the thing seal at the door for the FB and CC. I bet it will do really well. That's what is use in the brick pizza ovens and they get crazy hot, with a fairly small fire compared to the size...

Re: Reverse flow smoker build

This thing is nice man, I like the toggle clamps. Is the fire brick a more effective way to insulate the firebox? I haven't seen this on a smoker before. Very cool. You'll be smokin meat in no time!

Re: Hog cook times

I have seen pigs done, but never a whole wild hog. I've shot close to 100 of them but always butchered them or gave them to folks. What are you going to do about all the hair? I would pressure wash it if possible. They nasty. 140 lbs is a good size. Make sure its a sow. Pro-tip, the little piglets a...
