Re: My RF build

I completely understand the last thing you need is to have a wreck and dump the thing over in the middle of a cook.

I see a very well made unit you should be proud.

Re: My RF build

Oak can be found in eastern Canada but not in the west. That's where I am....Alberta. Poplar willow spruce and pine with the odd birch in the more northern end of the province is whats native around here. None of which I would use for smoking wood.

Re: My RF build

Well that's good that temp is even. I'm finding mine is consistently hotter at the throat end of the BP. Not a big issue as generally I just place the thicker chunks of critter at the warmer end. Its only a difference of about 10 degrees. Oak is not an option for the area I'm in. I would love to try...

Re: My RF build

Great job on the Wombat Squiggle I like how compact it is. Looks like you're getting great heat which I'm sure is largely due to the fire brick. The boxed cook chamber is also a great idea. What are you using for wood? Did you find the chamber hotter at one end?

Re: My RF build

Thanks for that I will give that a try. I short changed my build on the install of firebricks just because I only used the full size bricks. I could add at least 2 more pieces at the back wall near the FB throat opening. I am interested to see how this thing burns with your intakes positioned as the...

Re: Reverse flow smoker build "DELUXE"

RC I was thinking about that method putting charcoal in the basket at the start not lit. Then throwing in a lit chimney. I was worried that might add an unfavorable taste to the meat though. Maybe it would be better to do this at the start and not put the meat on until all the charcoal was burning. ...

Re: My RF build

I am very pleased with the fire brick. You will have to adjust the size of your FB so the volume is right with the fire brick installed. If I built another RF I wouldn't bother with the hidden hinges....way too much trouble. Really when you think about it hinges on the outside don't take anything aw...

Re: Reverse flow smoker build "DELUXE"

So what burns hotter hardwood charcoal or briquettes? I would prefer to stay with charcoal just thinking it will give better flavour. My next cook will be a full load of pork ribs but I'm a little concerned I won't have enough heat. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance...

Your photo of the chimney cut out looks exactly the same as when I cut mine. I like the 3 mm thickness. I wish my CC was that thick. Looking forward to seeing your build....

Re: Reverse flow smoker build "DELUXE"

Yeah I'm going to take out the foil pans. The larger pan nearest the chimney had water but the other 2 were empty. Was hoping to collect the drippings. I don't care about grease getting everywhere. I could keep chamber temperature at 225 but had to run tbe dampers at almost full open so I'm troubled...

Re: Reverse flow smoker build "DELUXE"

Well must say I'm disappointed with the heat this thing makes. Not sure maybe wrong charcoal but just not enough heat. The critter looks great but way too slow.....hmmm?

Re: Reverse flow smoker build "DELUXE"

As promised

She has been on cruise at 225 and rock steady. It was a bit of a struggle getting up to cooking temperature but I think that was because when I stated it was -3C outside. A lot of metal to get heated...

Re: Reverse flow smoker build "DELUXE"

Kingsmoke yes 2 reasons actually. First I thought I might like to use the top of FB to cook on like a Dutch oven full of beans or a griddle for bacon or appies etc. The second is just the practicality of trying to keep bricks in place on the roof. A task I didn't care to tackle. It also would have m...

Re: Reverse flow smoker build "DELUXE"

I just fired it up for the first time. Wanted to see how hot it would get running wide open. In 30 minutes it reached just over 225. Its about 10 degrees warmer on the end opposite the chimney. Im just going to let it burn wide open and hopefully that will rid it of anything nasty. In 40 minutes it ...

Heres the CC lid painted and guages and deluxe emblem installed. I also put the high heat gasket around the inside then a bead of high temperature RTV along the flange on the outside. Should seal just dandy.

Here is what started it all. I guy dropped this tank off at my work to toss into the scrap bin. It was a Challenger well tank. It's nice when you start with the main part of a build for free. Photo taken May 30 2016
