Re: So ive started a new project

Im going to follow this thread. I would love a GF but even the mini seems a bit large/heavy for a small household. When I cook, I do 1 brisket or 1 boston butt or 3 racks of ribs at a time. So a larger smoker is way overkill. When you get all the details sorted out I would love to see you post the f...

Re: Designing a Fish / Cold Smoker

I see the bug bit you. Move one project out and need to start another....I love it. Haha, your right. I have been meaning to build this one for a long time. It is so much easier to process fish when you can smoke big batches. We get to dipnet sockeye salmon every summer. I process 25-35 salmon at o...

Designing a Fish / Cold Smoker

Living up here in Alaska we get a bunch of salmon in the summer time. I'm looking at makeing a larger smoker. I want to design it lake an old fashion smoke house. The smoke cabinet would be raised with the firebox located away from it and piped to the underside of the smoker. I have a question thoug...

Re: where to buy smoke stack pipe

I picked up a piece of truck exhaust pipe. I used 3inch on my 100# propane tank build. It was pretty cheap and readly available.

Yes, all parts were made with 3/16 plate. When I started this all I had for a welder was a Craftsman 80 amp welder. I now have a Lincoln 180 Dual voltage.

Re: First Time Build 100# Propane Cylinder (Help Please)

It's going way better than last time. I am using bigger chuncks of wood and instead of having to feed it every 20 min. I am getting 40 - 50 min before having to feed the smoker. It seems to like to run at 275-285. The shoulder hit 170 in 5 hours. I have now wrapped it in butcher paper and planning o...

IMG_3123.jpg Wow what a way to learn using a stick burner. It's -4 this morning and I am doing a pork shoulder. I seem to be getting better at fire management. No black smoke today so far. I am using bigger pieces of wood as well. Will post a picture of the final product. Plan on wraping at 165-170...

Thanks Rodcrafter. The only thing I have available up here is alder and birch. So I am buying bags of western wood from Sportsman's Warehouse.

Re: First Time Build 100# Propane Cylinder (Help Please)

Thanks Rodcrafter. It was easier to get clean smoke when I put one small split. Only issue is that I would run out of coals. Should I keep pacticing with just splits or should I run some lump and split throughout the smoke? I really want to try and stay all wood. What is the proper process in adding...

Re: First Time Build 100# Propane Cylinder (Help Please)

Well here is the Q view from yesterday. I ended up wrapping them at 2.5 hours. The taste is amazing and it is the first time I have gotten a real smoke ring. The penitration went almost all the way throught to the bone. I didnt use a commercial rub, just salt, pepper, paprika, chilli powder, and a b...

Re: First Time Build 100# Propane Cylinder (Help Please)

The weather warmed up today to 41F. Built and attached the front shelf and I got the smoker cleaned. I also got it painted. Going to bring it home from my father in-laws later this week and get it seasoned. Then Saturday I am doing ribs for my belated birthday party. I am very happy with the results...

Well the wind died down, and the temp was 31F today. I got the handle welded to the cook chamber door and deciedd to fire it up. I followed the how to build a fire in a reverse flow smoker. All went well, I was very pleased. Since this is the first firing I decided to run it hot. I used a chimney lo...

Don't paint too soon....you will find a hundred things to add/tweek the first couple times you use it! Thanks Dirtytires. Thats my plan. I want to get it burned in and tested first before thinking about painting. Currently waiting for the weather to break. It's been in the teens/twentys and blowing...

Re: First Time Build 100# Propane Cylinder (Help Please)

Well I am almost there. Tonight I added the firebox latch, and air vent control. I also added a handle on the end to facility moving the smoker around. I also had to mod the cook chamber grate. It was keeping the door from fully sealing and started building a shelf for the front. The last thing to d...

Re: First Time Build 100# Propane Cylinder (Help Please)

Thanks all. It has been a great learning experience. I'm going to hate to see it come to an end. My welding is getting a bit better but still not enough stick time. Already thinking about a bigger backyard smoker. Something like 26x40 or so.

Re: First Time Build 100# Propane Cylinder (Help Please)

Getting closer. I got the grate supports installed and the grate built, valve hole welded up, hole drilled for the exhaust, exhaust welded in. All I have left is to fab the vent cover, firebox handle/lock, and make handles for the cook chamber and for moving the smoker. I have enough square tubing a...

Well more work accomplished today. The smoker is upright on its own Yeah!!! I got my adjustable hight front leg fabed up. I also cut the baffel plate, fitted it and welded it in. That was a doozy. I couldn't get ahold of my buddy with a plasma cutter so I cut it out with an angle grider. I then grou...

Well, I got some work done on the smoker last night. I got the wheels added to the smoker and started prep on the front leg. Tomorrow I will finish up the front leg and try and get the baffel plate in and maybe some work on the rack. It's starting to come to gather.

Re: First Time Build 100# Propane Cylinder (Help Please)

Well, I am back to finishing up the smoker after one hell of a summer/fall. My mother and my mother in law were both diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and passed away this fall. On a good note. I picked up a Lincoln 180 Dual with cart and guages for a smoking deal. It looks barely used. I got the whole ...

Re: Undersized Firebox ??

Everything I know the calculators are very accurate. With a firebox that small you will struggle getting to temp and maintaining temp. I would go about 105% of required. I'm sure you will get more comments from more experienced builders. I am in the process of building my first smoker. I am going wi...
