I agree with Big T I wouldn't make the opening any smaller or it won't let ash fall through without bumping the rack. Making memories! Fire grate...

Have a home built RF. 60 gallon air compressor tank for the CC. Insulated FB. Lot of things I don't like about it. Have most of the stuff to build its replacement, would like to avoid making the same mistakes. Anyhow, haven't had much luck in the way of keeping a healthy coal bed. Got bored few days...

Been struggling trying to figure this out. Cooked one on Sunday. Wanted to use the RF but thanks to some bucket head not covering the wood pile before the snow/rain started this winter my wood is VERY wet. Used our XL Egg. I wire brush the grates prior to cooking. After 6 or so cooks I brush the grates off and spray them with some "super cleaner" I got from NAPA. Afer hosing them off I take a putty knife and wire brush to the CC. I then heat it up...get the cook chamber up to 450* or so. After a half hour or so open t...

and put it in the bottom of our XL Big Green Egg. Put the fire grate in the Egg and stack cookie cooling racks on top of that.
I also have used our RF. Just put the AMNPS in the firebox and open the vents...
