Yeah man its been done plenty of times.Youre better off to cut the elbow off and run a straight exhaust off the top of the CC.Then build your warming box and cut a hole (or use where your elbow is) add a dampner and add an exhaust stack to the vertical box

Is the measurement for the opening side to side or bottom of tank to the cut?

The half moon right now is a little bigger at 17.50
