Awesome fabricating. Love that cooker. Great pic with the dog in there. Funny stuff.

Re: Brother-in-law Budget Build

Great build. I finished a direct flow build a few months ago and now I already want to build a reverse flow. It’s like an addiction or something.

Re: First time builder. 20"x40" ish.

I put some tuning plates in today. So far I’m getting 12° to24° difference. I’m very happy with that.

Re: Angle for Tuning plate above Throat in CC

I slightly slanted my plate that’s above the throat. The rest of them are flat. I didn’t weld in a rail for them either. I just set them in flat. I was getting 100° to 125° difference throughout the grate without the tuning plates. Today is the first day running it with them and my temps have been 1...

Re: First time builder. 20"x40" ish.

Finally got some food cooked on it. It came out great but I’m have big temperature differences from one side of the grate to the other. When I did a test run there was only 50° difference. When I put meat on it I’m getting over 100° from one side to the other difference. I really don’t understand it...

Re: First time builder. 20"x40" ish.

Well I finally painted it. I messed up though. I went with a flat black at first. Then I thought it needed a little semi gloss. I only painted the door before realizing I didn’t like the semi gloss after all. I lightly sanded it and re painted it with the flat but now the door is darker. I ended up ...

Paint looks great. I’m using Rustoleam high heat and it has a much more matte shine to it. Did you put something over it?

Re: First time builder. 20"x40" ish.

I added a thermometer port and made a little shelf big enough to hold a maverick or a smoke thermometer. I was going to just muscle opening and closing the door but realized it was to heavy fir my wife to lift (not that she touches my smokers) so I added a counter balance that acts as my door stop a...

Re: First time builder. 20"x40" ish.

I bought cheap Harbor freight casters that were rated at 400 pounds and that was a big mistake. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180129/22be69cf35bcc0048f89fc5df2961558.jpg I went to a place that only sells casters and purchased these. They are way more beefy. Now I need to figure out how to get t...

Re: First time builder. 20"x40" ish.

Finally got my smoker back from the sand blaster after a month and a half. Ridiculous. They did a good job but the blasting uncovered a lot of my imperfections in welding. There quite a few holes. I’ll post a few pics of them. I don’t want to fill them in with welds as it will splatter the newly bla...

Re: First time builder. 20"x40" ish.

Got my FB door handle done. I’m still not sure I like the elk antler or not. I’m so ready to be done with it that it might have to do for now. Grinder touch up and then paint. The finish line is near. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171206/bf2111ccb7e99628c58470ff271a6093.jpg Sent from my iPhone ...

Re: First time builder. 20"x40" ish.

Fabricated up some parts today. Finally got a real handle on the cook chamber and made a dampener for the stack. All I have left now is a fire box door handle and then grind up some areas that need a little touch up. I should be done Monday. Then I’ll get it sand blasted and figure out how to paint ...

Re: First time builder. 20"x40" ish.

I cut all new door seals again and put on the new hinges. Took forever to get the seals on straight and flush. All welds are on the inside. It was worth the time because it came out tight and looks good. The only weld on the outside is where the seal sides meet the top and bottom but I’ll grind thos...

Can I use zinc for this?

I want to drill a hole in my air intake wheel at about the point you see the head of the lag bolt. I’m going to cut off the lag bolt head and chop off a few inches of thread. Then run the bolt in the hole. Then I’m going to weld in the hole from the inside and grind it smooth. The reason I’m using a...

I torch cut them out of 1/4” flat stock. I have not attached them yet. I only put them up there for the picture. I’m going to run a bead all the way around when I do attach them.

Re: First time builder. 20"x40" ish.

I couldn’t stand how off my door seals were so I cut them them off. Starting over with 1 1/4” wide flat stock but I’m not sure if I’ll go 1/8” thick or a little thinner. I also cut out some new hinges. Giving myself more work damn it. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171115/5afb9dfed0b210694229826...

Thermometer port.

What are you guys doing for a thermometer port? I don’t really want to spend another $75 on a high dollar thermometer for the cook chamber door and I won’t settle for a cheap one. I’ll just use my Maverick. My cook chamber is 1/4” thick. Are you guys drilling a hole and that’s it or is there some ty...

Can you have to good of a draw?

I have another thread going on my build but I'll ask this question separately. Pit info: My CC chamber is 40" long 19" diameter. FB is 18" long 20" diameter. My opening from FB to CC is 13 3/4" long and 6" wide. A pit calculator called for my FB intake to have 15 1/2" sq inches. I went a littler big...

I can't say I'm real happy with the door seals though. Cause they aren't making great contact and I didn't give room for a gasket. Might have to heat them up and pound them into a better seal.

Re: First time builder. 20"x40" ish.

The welds on the door strapping will be touched up and made look better. I got them in place but will go over them better to make it cleaner. I got the stack welded on, FB and CC door seals welded on. Door hinges welded on. I see the finish line coming up. Still a little farther away then I would li...
