Re: Questions about a 120 gallon RF smoker

Have you used the Smoker builder calculators that Pete designed, I've heard they were pretty user friendly. Here's a link http://smokerbuilder.com/forums/app.php/page/other-calcs . Yes, I did, and I compared it to the 'other' calculator, and both numbers came out very similar. I like 3/8" plate exc...

Re: Questions about a 120 gallon RF smoker

I like the idea of a trapezoid! Didn't even consider that, so thanks for the idea. It will be a lot easier to cut on the DoAll bandsaw, too. I'm building this out of 3/8" plate.

Re: Questions about a 120 gallon RF smoker

I was wondering if I could get a little help. I've got my dimensions figured, and I've got them plugged into the calculator. Here they are for reference: Jeffs bbq pit.pdf I am not understanding how to correctly calculate the firebox opening to the cooking chamber. I want to use a half moon, and it ...

Re: 120 gallon smoke punk build

This is a work of art. Cudo's on the fantastic job.

I made the mistake of showing my wife this, and now she says "hey, can you make ours look like that. THAT IS AWESOME!"

Great job.

Re: Questions about a 120 gallon RF smoker

Thanks a bunch. I was leaning towards 3/16" or 1/4", not feeling too good about 1/8". I appreciate the help. I just upgraded my welding rig to a pristine Millermatic 200 from a hobbiest who was the original owner and put less than 10 hours of time on it. It's in like new condition for a 1988 model, ...

Re: Questions about a 120 gallon RF smoker

Guys, I want to make a good, sturdy cart/base for this to roll around the patio on. It's gonna weigh around 1000 lbs., between the 48" CC, the 3/8" firebox and baffle, etc..... 4 sturdy heavy duty casters underneath it. For the base and bottom shelf, I'm thinking square tube and expanded metal. What...

Re: Questions about a 120 gallon RF smoker

Of these choices, which is the best way to cut 3/8" steel. My CC is 3/8", and so is my FB, which I just picked up the plate steel today. 1. oxy/acetylene torch 2. 4 1/2" and/or 7" angle grinder In my workshop, I also have a DoAll V-36 36" metal bandsaw, but I will have to break down the 3/8" plate i...

Re: Questions about a 120 gallon RF smoker

I'm going to install a shadow plate at the same extended height as the top of the firebox, with my BP just about 1" above that. I'm still acquiring steel, including picking up two 4'X4' squares of 3/8" plate today. Thanks for helping me lock down some of the details. I tend to be very.....ok.....ext...

Re: Questions about a 120 gallon RF smoker

Newbie question.....

When you guys weld up the firebox, do you weld just the outside, or do you weld the inside corners, as well?

Re: Questions about a 120 gallon RF smoker

Great pictures, Squiggle! As they say, worth a 1000 words. I get it now. I found a guy with 100 sheets of expanded metal.....13 gauge 4X8 sheets dirt cheap. That's 3/32" thick. Is that too thin to make grates from for the smoker? I would also use it for the sides of the firebox, but plan on using he...

Re: Questions about a 120 gallon RF smoker

Questions seem to be easier to get noticed 1 or 2 at a time, instead of writing a 3 page essay......I hope you don't mind. I'm planning on taking a ride to a steel supplier that isn't close, but I have heard tall tales of great prices, so I'm going to make the 90 minute trek. In doing so, I'd like t...

Re: Questions about a 120 gallon RF smoker

I like to mount the BP about an inch above the throat and use a shadow plate for the first 12'' or so and it's mounted at the same height as the throat. It will help absorb the heat right out of the FB and avoid having a hot spot. 2) I mount the BP level from front to back and end to end with a 2''...

Re: Questions about a 120 gallon RF smoker

Thanks, guys, for the input. This is going to be a patio smoker, so I will fab a cart for it to roll around on. I know it's going to be heavy. I thought about putting it on a trailer, but I really don't plan on taking this anywhere. We entertain alot, and it's pretty much going to get put on the pat...

Questions about a 120 gallon RF smoker

Other than introducing myself on the "Intro" sub forum, this is my first post regarding the smoker I would like to build. I want to thank everybody in advance for this great site, as I have been reading for days already, and have answered a lot of my previous questions, already, just by reading the ...

New builder saying "Hello"

Hello, and thanks to the forum for accepting me. I've been lurking after doing an internet search for an upcoming smoker build, my first, and decided to join this forum. I've been BBQ'ing and smoking for quite a while, but have only started to get more serious about it in the past couple years. My w...
