Re: Tools and equipment to get started

C-clamps are very nice. Pipe clamps are a must. Harbor freight has some cheap welding tables that nice to have. I was able to get two of them for about $100. If you are looking a building a gravity smoker then angle clamps are handy, to hold pieces at 90° . Then you need flapper disk for grinding, l...

Heatermeter would love to find some time to meet you and see your operation. If you are interested. I’m completely new to this building pits.
Sure, any time, I'm available today if ya like. I'm just as new, welding.

Casters at harbor frieght are pretty good, I hope. I got casters rated for 600 pounds pretty cheap.

Re: Mini Gravity Feed.

The 1 3/4 sounds like it was from the double pan plans. I would double check all plans and cutlist very carefully. I found a few mistaks in the double pan gravity feed smoker, that has cost me extra money.

Re: 1st time builder, 1st time welder 1st well, it's my first build post, I think, lol

You only need the top bit of the rack holder on the last third or so. That is just to stop the rack from tilting. So if you wanted to save a bit of money you can cut the top one in half and only weld the top and bottom on the first bit. Ahh, I did not think about doing that. But, that would still r...

Re: 1st time builder, 1st time welder 1st well, it's my first build post, I think, lol

Found another overlooked mistake in the GF plans. The plans Call for 10 1/8- 3/4x3/4 angle iron pieces for the rails to hold the racks. But, when you look at how they are welded and how they are used, you need 20 of them. I guess you could just use two pieces per rack, then the plans should state th...

I don't think so, you would have to take the FB apart to get to it. But it's pretty thick, and should last a fairly long time

When I was talking to Frank he suggested screwing the exterior skin on to prevent warp, not sure if anyone has done this. I think I'm going to go with some 11 gauge on the door. I already received a quote for some 50x33 pieces and it's not to bad. It will only add about a 100 pounds or so to the do...

Re: 1st time builder, 1st time welder 1st well, it's my first build post, I think, lol

I was doing some welding on the door and I think I went a little to fast and may need to start over on it. The sheet metal is warped, or has visible waves in it. Is there anything I can do to minigate it or should I just start over. Both side are not as flat as I would like. I was welding the seems ...

Re: New user

If you plan on using charcoal, then your heatermeter will be fine, as long as it's sealed pretty good. If you plan on using wood, then forget using a temp controller. Using wood you have to constantly feed new wood and each time you introduce more air into the system and changing the temperature of ...

I was able to do some more work. I'm also having an issue with my welder and my garages 15amp circuit, so tonight or tomorrow I'm going to install a 20amp breaker and an outlet. I'm having issues with welding the .250 and half inch marerial, as it is I'm having to reset the breaker after about a min...

My wife is Chinese Malaysian, she only understands one thing, "why are you making it, if it's not going to be making money"

To her it's only costing us money and taking up space in the garage.

How the flatten .250 steel sheet

I'm making the double pan gravity and I picked up my .250 inch precut material and when I got home I realized it had a bow. I could have probably been ok and straighten it as I welded it but when three pieces are bowing outward and one piece bowing inward, it made it difficult. What would be the eas...

Just recieved my quarter inch material and will hopefully get it welded up tonight. When I went to get my material a few weeks ago, they could not find the half inch laser cut material, so they plasma cut it. Well today, what do I find on the pallet, the lost half inch material. So now I have an ext...

Re: Insulation for the GF

I also bought mine from Zoro after doing alot of price comparisons. Bought 8 two inch sheets cheaper then any where else that had 6 sheets and shipping.

Also, I bought roxul comfortbat for stuffing the frame from a local hardware store. Not sure how the board insulation would work for that.

I been with the project since it was known as the Linkmeter(Linksys router to heatermeter). I started last night and this morning did some more work on it. I'm getting better at welding, I had one burn through and I fixed that with some weld. Tonight around midnight, I will do some spot welding of the frame and in the afternoon will do some more. Here are some pictures. https://preview.ibb...

Ok my wife's English needs to get better.

What sounded like thousands was more like dozens. She got, thankfully 10 dozen. So no new kids on the way next year, lol
