Re: Stack Size

Thank you. Ok I can understand that, and did not think of it that way. So is reducing the size of the firebox by insulating it a wise choice? Or should I cut some off?. Add a flat plate inside firebox on the bottom? Ideas?
Thanks,
Bill

Re: Stack Size

Sheffsmoker, Thank you I can understand that analogy however that wouldn't that be describing a larger cook chamber. Meaning I wouldn't be able to supply enough heat because I would never be able to build a big enough heat source. My fire box is according to feldons at 150% needed. I dont know what ...

Re: Stack Size

So the diameter is irrelevant just the volume matters.
What is the downside to a firebox that is larger? What trouble am I headed for? Couldn't I just use part of the box build a smaller fire?
Thank you

Stack Size

Good Afternoon everyone, It has been quite a while since I have been on here so I hope everyone is doing good and staying healthy. So I have started to build a reverse flow to the specs below. Link to BBQ Pit Calculator My question is with my stack is that too big of a diameter and therefore too sho...

Re: Planning the next few smokers.

Here is what the feldons calculator comes up with for my dimensions. FB air intakes will be 2- 6" round dampers and a rectangle one towards the top of the box, all on the flat end.I'm wondering should I reduce the diameter of the stack to make it taller for more draw? Go from 6" @ 19.2 tall or to 5"...

Re: Planning the next few smokers.

Thanks guys, great points. I figured I would have to put a vent to open and close for the WC to work correctly, or to be able to use as a vertical smoker. Possibly closing off BP and opening into box making it flow under BP and only into it when I wanted to. I don't know how much I'd use it at the m...

Planning the next few smokers.

Good day everyone. Last year around this time I built my first smoker, a standard offset out of a 80 gallon compressor tank. It took me a few months to finish and I was actually painting it on Christmas day! Definitely a decent amount of work but it was a lot of fun and turned out great. I have been...

Re: LouAnne... 1000 gallon standard offset smoker

Hey man, that turned out great! Good thing you had extra capable hands willing to help out. I really like the design on the firebox, I am going to do something similar on my next one. One question I have is placement of the chimney. You put this real low, why? Does it help balance the temperature di...

Re: Smoker out of a 80 gallon compressor tank

The inside racks are 23"x48"bottom 17"x48"top. I put a 6" dia pipe for stack. This one is really efficient. The top rack gets hotter then bottom by almost 70° not sure how I could fix that. Thought about a small vent but not sure. Side by side is within 5° with some plates I put in to hold some heat...

Re: Smoker out of a 80 gallon compressor tank

Well here is the material just dropped off by my brother in law. Unbelievably awesome! He must really like my BBQ! 30" .375 thick 12' long and 24" .375 thick pieces. I will start a new thread on this build. I am going to be looking for help with experience on warmer boxes. Other things too.

Re: Smoker out of a 80 gallon compressor tank

Smoke_savage-- I put it at the highest I could figuring it would help with the draw. I've been cooking on this alot since I built it, the top shelf is about 50 degrees hotter then the bottom. I don't know how the stack being farther in would affect it if it would make it hotter or not. What is the a...

Re: Smoker out of a 80 gallon compressor tank

Thank you, that kinda what i was thinking. I don't want all the heat to just go out the stack.
I built the hinges with 5/8" bar stock.

Re: Smoker out of a 80 gallon compressor tank

Hello, I've been using the crap out of my smoker since i built it. Amazing how much joy I'm getting out of cooking meat! If my wife knew i would get this excited while cooking dinner i would have been given one 20 years ago! I'm going to make some tuning plates to balance out the temps from end to e...

Re: Smoker out of a 80 gallon compressor tank

Finished up my first smoker this week. Couldn't be happier with the finished product. Thank you to everyone that answered my questions and gave advice. And the fine people on Facebook too. Fired it up yesterday to see how she cooked. It was awesome to see smoke rolling out! It flowed freaking awesom...

Re: Smoker out of a 80 gallon compressor tank

Well it's been a little bit since I posted my progress. Everything has been pretty smooth sailing and about ready finish it up soon. Built the firebox out of 3/16 and welded it up to the cook chamber. Not a welder by any means but I'm pretty happy with most of my welds. Some are crappy and got groun...

Re: Smoker out of a 80 gallon compressor tank

Welded on my stack and the expanded metal. Fire box next week or so. This has been a great project so far! Only have maybe an hour after work each day, it would go faster if I had all the equipment at home! Dreaming there! Going to sand blast the outside after the firebox is welded on then it's time...

Re: Smoker out of a 80 gallon compressor tank

Is it necessary for me to do a burn out on this tank? I was thinking that I was going to weld the stack on, weld expanded metal for cook grates in, cut the hole for the firebox. Then throw some wood inside the cook chamber and fire it up. Is it needed or just wait until it's all welded up right befo...

Re: Smoker out of a 80 gallon compressor tank

I want to go with two cook grates. How high above the main grate should I put the upper cook grate? 5" good enough?
