Re: WHADDYA THINK of this plan?

I built a center fire smoker and my thread is in here. I left openings on both ends and it works great. I would caution you on propane as well. Use wood or lump coal and wood chips. Have fun and good luck

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

Well it's been 6 weeks since I posted, in that time I have tried smoking a pork butt, that came out very well, but I should have trimmed more off it. Had pulled pork sandwiches for a week. Also I have done beer butt chickens, one didn't make it due to my mistake of using lighter fluid. The second on...

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

Been cooking with the smoker almost every weekend, except when I am out on a ride. I am gonna admit that this is a bit addicting. I am now making my own rubs and sauces. Wife looks at me and just smiles, why she smiling? I think it's because she doesn't have to cook. Or is it that she enjoys a great...

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

As of now I have three cooks through the smoker two cooks of ribs and one with chicken thighs. I know one for sure. My smoker does NOT like rain showers or rain period. The CC temps went all over the place, from 180 to 260 before I caught it. Then close down the intakes and another shower would go t...

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

We did it!!!! Painted the smoker using Flat Black and Harley Davidson Orange rattle can paint. Wife said I could have made the patio more Orange ( oops) So here are some pics of the completed smoker and a Q-view. Now for the cook, I used lump coal and a few apple wood logs for this cook, The wife bo...

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

Hello again all, Went out and tried the third light off in the smoker, but did a couple of things different. 1) I used lump coal this time instead of briquettes, 2) i used the intakes to control the temp instead of the exhaust. RC, I got your thinking, the intakes allowed the temps to be controlled ...

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

Went out and "played" with the smoker again to learn what it is trying to tell me. Started with a full basket of charcoal and lit it up. It takes 35-45 minutes for it to get warmed up enough to put the food in it. Today I experimented with the exhaust vents. RC, I think I know what you are getting a...

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

Hello out there, its the mad smoker builder back again. Well I got a couple of small thermometers for a steal and thought since today is going to be around 40 degrees, lets play with the smoker. So I installed the thermometers, went to the hardware store to buy a 15 lb bag of Oak Ridge charcoal. Fil...

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

Well we loaded it up and we hauled it home. Right now its still in the back of the pickup as I am waiting on a friend to bring his fork lift so we can unload it. I told him not to make a special trip over but if he has it out and if he wouldn't mind I would appreciate it. But I did learn a few thing...

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

When I designed this smoker, I wanted two exhausts, kinda like duals on a car. I had two old exhausts off of my Harley and decided what the heck, lets use them. Now I had to place them just right so they would 1) function, and 2) look good. When I cut my doors I thought of cutting just one big door ...

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

ITS ABOUT TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have a roller, The Critter is on wheels. Also welded the shadow plate to the cooking chamber. Tomorrow we place baffle plate and goop it down with heat resistant silicone. I got to ask the owners of the farm if its ok to light the smoker in the shed. If not I will wai...

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

Rodcrafter ;

You brought up a point that I hadn't thought of, radiant heat. Although my throat cutout is 12 x 3 my contact area between my firebox and cooking chamber is 24 x 3. Now this gets more interesting by the day.

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

Dirtytires; You did read correctly, my firebox is 67% of what the calculator said a reverse flow smoker should have. My throat size is 36 sq. in. ( 12 x 3 ) where as the recommended throat size was 27.648 or (9 x 3). The throat opening is direct center of the cooking chamber. I also made a shadow pl...

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

Ok all the welding on the outside of the Cooking chamber is done. The top half of the frame is attached to the Cooking chamber as well. Going to use that huge cherry picker in the background to lift the top half and get it set to weld the legs from the top part to the bottom. Then weld the shadow pl...

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

Well this week I have been doing a lot of thinking on how I should proceed on things like door handles and such. I got the Cooking chamber doors done and I like the look. Its different and its home made, but best of all it works. I also got the exhaust stacks done and although it didn't come out as ...

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

Just kicked back and thought on how to get my doors closed. Working at the farmers shop they have a lot of surplus steel parts to use. So we decided to take a couple of potato chains off a beet lifter that were worn out and used them to fabricate my door handles and locking mechanism.

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

Ok, yesterday I got the doors framed and welded to the cooking chamber. Today I spent most of my time working on the exhaust. I am going with two pipes just for grins and giggles. Maybe I should have went with just one, as drilling 3/8 bolts to fit my exhaust and to make the butterflies work was jus...

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

Yesterday kind of bummed me out a bit, I forgot my drill bits at home and wasn't about to drive 26 miles just to get them. So I had my exhaust inserts expanded to fit the chrome exhaust stacks that I cut down from old Harley mufflers. I also found some old foot pegs to use as handles for my intakes ...

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

Well got quite a bit done on my build today, 1) got the firebox door attached to the firebox, I designed the hinges and had them cut, opens up the door real wide, which I like. 2) I got the firebox welded to the Cooking Chamber, that was an Interesting feat for a rookie welder. 3) I got the wheels w...

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

Ok, I haven't worked on the smoker for awhile, Dentists, Doctors, sub zero weather etc etc. Yesterday I went and continued to work on my fire box and framed around the door so I can insulate the door later on. I started to build a charcoal basket and got it framed out and the bottom grate in. I am g...

Re: My Center Feed Smoker Build

RC. After some thought I see what you are talking about, I can get scrap 3/16 cut to fit the one side and slide the big piece to any position I want to. I have 4" on either side to play with. That being said I will get a 14" * 4" of 3/16 and see how that works as well. Also get a 14" * 6" of the sam...
