Just be sure that there's not a lip on the top of the throat where it exits the FB, it needs to be a smooth transition.

I would work out where I wanted the racks and then tweak it from there to get the opening as tall as possible within reason.

Okay, so as I understand it the area of the BP gap should be equal to 75% to 100% of the area of the firebox to cook chamber opening.

But how do you know if it needs adjusting? If it's out of whack does it effect end to end temp spread? Are there other symptoms?

I have seen some people who welded the flanges and hinges on the door before cutting it all the way out.
