Re: HELP with Start Up Temps

I use a mapp torch to light mine from the ash door. Leave the chute door open until lots of glowing coals. Then shut chute door and open CC exhaust. Takes about 45 mins to reach 250

Re: GF firebox sizing

If you have the plans can you work it out from cook chamber size and firebox size. See if there a rough common ratio between mini and double pan?

I used 1*1/4 on my GF. Just set the gap to 1/8 when fixing hinges.

Re: Santa Maria Grill Plans

Following on from this do you know if all the plans come with a BOM? Not after a cut list file but just a general material list for pricing? @FrankCox

I got a cheap one off eBay. It's the square maze type.

Re: It's time.

I just use a cold smoke generator in the bottom of my cook chamber. Fill it up with sawdust and sit it on the transfer tube and light it. Works fine.

Nope, not insulated. Think of it as an upmarket, square UDS. Not sure if insulating it would be of any real benefit as such.
Pretty chilly here in the UK this time of year. And I guess it would be more fuel efficient in the summer.

Can anyone tell me if the frankencube XL is insulated or if it's possible to make it so?

I would shift it to the left so it sits on top of the bottom rail.

Lump or briquette?

I live in the UK so be mindful that we don't have the vast range of quality briquettes that you do in the States but do most of you run lump or briquette in your GF smokers?

Re: MMA or MIG/MAG welder

Just bought an esab rebel multi process. MMA Mig and Tig all from one machine. Awesome. Don't know where you are based but it can run off a normal 13A three pin plug in the UK

Re: Vertical or horizontal

Horizontal. Agree with towtruck that your tank is pretty small. You are only going to get 1 shelf that is roughly 11” x 24” which does not give you a whole lot of space. That may be just what you want but keep in mind a bigger tank is roughly the same amount of work and money to build. One mistake ...

Vertical or horizontal

Just picked up a 12*32 compressor tank to build a smoker for the boys at work. Would it be better to go with a vertical or horizontal build. Will be using an insulated firebox

Well I've got mine completed at last. I would post some pics but it's such a ballache to do that here as they have to be uploaded to a host first. Still, I cooked some baby backs at work for the guys and they loved them.

Grease drain.

Those that have grease drains, do you leave it open all the time your cooking or just drain occasionally?
