Water Pan for the Mini

Does anyone use a water pan in their GF? Would it help with the bottom of briskets getting too much heat? On cooks at 225, briskets are crunchy on the bottom side, meat side down. Or should I put them fat side down, towards the heat? I cook on a mini. Thanks for your feedback.

Re: Which stumps clone is my best option?

Making it 4-6" taller is my recommendation to give you a little more room between the racks. I have trouble with larger butts rubbing against the upper racks. I also built mine with a shelf underneath to make it about 8" taller. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200406/1e2b43bc4f6dae7784fd6bcbfcee...

Re: Which stumps clone is my best option?

I built the mini last year. When I was trying to decide which one to build, the mini or the double, my main concern was capacity. I built the mini to the specification that are in the plans. I wish I had built the mini a couple of inches taller to allow for more room between the racks. I can get thr...

Re: How to run a gravity feed??

I contacted FireBoard. You can send them the cook you recorded and they can review the data. Found out the cooking chamber probe, the one I was using to control the fan, was not working correctly and they are sending me another one.

Re: How to run a gravity feed??

Any updates on this? This also happens to me but I usually don't get the opportunity to fully load it. When I do use all the shelves I use the variance to my advantage. Thicker cuts at the bottom rack. I have noticed that when I heat it up a long time in advance I get less variance. I am going to t...

I’ll check both probes.

Re: How to run a gravity feed??

Smokerbuild: I am getting 248 and 250 between the top rack and the bottom rack. I am running a water pan. The ball valve is 3/4 open or so. I have a fan providing air to the valve. We both agree that th 40 degree difference you have is too much, but for the life of me, I can’t come up with a good r...

Re: How to run a gravity feed??

I’ll go and get some temps for you now. I’m smoking some spares. The 2 ounces is total amount of wood. I put a piece or two in the ash box. Two small pieces of cherry. For the entire cook you only add that much wood? Are you using the water pan and getting those temps? Sent from my iPhone using Tap...

Re: How to run a gravity feed??

Hi Smokerbuild, I have used a water pan, and I think the results are better. This is my 3rd one. I built this one slightly different than Frank's plan. Are you using the natural draft only of this smoker? Or is a fan involved? With only 10" between the upper and lower grill that 40 degrees seems li...

How to run a gravity feed??

I built the mini to the specs on the plan. I get a temperature of 40+ degrees higher on the top shelf compared to the lowest shelf next to the heat channel. Would I get a consistent temperature throughout the CC if I put a water pan on the heat channel to act as a heat sink? Another question: any is...

Re: Start of a mini

I’m talking about lining the inside of the firebox frame with sheet metal and insulating it the same way as the cook chamber side. It’ll be insulated. It’ll take a lot less insulation. I built the GF mini. I packed the entire area around the firebox with insulation and also filled the square tubing...

Re: Start of a mini

I asked frank the other day and he said I shouldn’t have any issues. I have all the parts ordered just waiting for them to show up. Steel is going to be under $100. I guess my boss likes me. Re: Controller for a mini

I bought a FireBoard with the 20 cfm fan to run in my Mini GF. It’s great. Connects to WiFi so no matter where I am I can see what’s going on in the Cooking chamber.

Re: Fuel type and Controller

I've burned both briquettes and natural lump in my GF. I greatly prefer the lump. Briquettes produce a lot more ash, and I don't care for the imparted flavor. The natural lump produces a cleaner smoke and a lot less ash, it doesn't ash over the grate like briquettes do. B+B is now being carried loc...

I’m interested in knowing what brand of charcoal you use and why? I use Kingsford Professional but I’ve heard good things about B & B. I’ve had a few cooks on my mini gravity feed. I bought a FireBoard with fan. Running test now. The cooking chamber reached 250 degrees in less than 10 minutes. Compa...

Nice build. How do those wheels do on grass? What size are they? Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk The wheels are for hard surfaces only. I think the tires are rated at 400 lbs. each. Re: Mini GF Experience

I have cooked twice since painting. I would describe the finish as similar to the enamel finish on wood. It appears to be very durable. I’m used one quart for the Eastwood 2K high temp engine paint. I used two cans of 2K high temp primer. It was enough primer, barely. It’s better to get a quart of p...

I had trouble maintaining temperature and getting back to temperature after I open the door in my GF Mini. Is the Guru worth it’s cost for the GF?

Mini GF Experience

I started last night with 2 briskets. Just put 2 tri tips on and going to spatchcock 2 chickens for good measure. Trying to get familiar with the way the mini works. Lots of wind today and I’m trying to figure out how to work with the wind.

Mini GF Experience

I started several months ago on my first fabrication project, the GF Mini. I had the best time. Thanks to Frank and Tom for all the advice. I’m sitting in the shop with the seasoning completed and the first fire started. Thank you to all of you, I’ve read many of your posts, very helpful. I used Eas...
