Re: Getting started with my build

The comet wasn't working as well as I had hoped, so I put a scotchbrite pad on a air sander and its completely out now. I sprayed the outside of it with grill paint, coated the inside with vegetable oil, and seasoned it today with a tin pan full of charcoal and hickory chunks. I still need a grate, ...

Re: Getting started with my build

Thanks frank. I burned it out with my LP weed torch and it got all the outside and most of the inside liner out. I will pick up some comet tomorrow while I'm searching for a Webber grate. Its coming out good so far. I'm looking forward to seasoning this thing. :D

Getting started with my build

I finally found a food grade open lid drum and I'm gonna do a burnout with my weed burner. The first question is, do I need to completely burnout the orange lining on the inside, second, can I just wire wheel what doesn't get burned out. Any help is appreciated.

Re: UDS in cold climate?

I think I'm gonna build one anyway, and if i have problems, I will try a water heater wrap. I really want to build a revers flow smoker, but I haven't found the right material. The UDS will be a fun build, and when I do get the stuff for the offset one, Ill probably donate the UDS to one of my Frien...

UDS in cold climate?

Im thinking of building a a UDS and I live in Michigan. My question is, will it hold temp in winter here. Im thinking because of the thin wall thickness, it probably wont work well ( hold temp well ) in the cold winters here. Does anyone else here use them in cold weather with good results? Thanks, ...

Re: Favorite kind of wood to smoke with

Ive been using allot of cherry lately, but I really like hickory for pork. The cherry really did a nice job on briskets. I have a local source for apple, hickory, and cherry. I have allot of maples in my yard, is maple a good smoker wood?

Re: First Competition

The wife a I went to a riboff in Toledo a couple of weekends ago, I had hi hopes for some knockout ribs, and well all I can say is, I'm glad that I can cook my own. We tried three sample boxes of four bones each, two had no smoke flavor and one was not bad. It was a fun day, with a good crowd.
