Re: Cutting out the door

yeah same thing i think, this is just the name brand one from home depot. It was $30 but like I said, it took me tops 30 minutes to cut the entire door out counting the whole process. Actual cutting time was maybe 5 minutes. There are some sparks but not nearly as much as you'd think. Plus the metal...

Re: Cutting out the door

Thanks guys. I got it cut out today. It only very very slightly sprung. Maybe 1/16th of an inch, so not to bad. Side note as far as the actual cutting I used a diablo steel demon 7 1/4" circular saw blade. I've never really seen them mentioned around here but I will tell you that I was absolutely sh...

Re: Cutting out the door

doing one but my guess is I'll need a counterweight when its said and done. I'm kind of already planning on that being the case, I would like to put 2 food grates in though. So you think going a few more inches past 3:00 if i'm doing 2 grates?

Re: Cutting out the door

This is kind of where I was leaning also. Then I was going to come in 2" from both sides.

Cutting out the door

So I'm getting ready to cut out my cook chamber door on a piece of 24" diameter pipe that will be 44" long. Here is my question. What is the best positioning of the door? I was going to go 1" past 3:00 for the bottom food grate but what about the top? Is it best to cut it right at the 12:00 position...

Re: Steel pipe

I just called places that sell steel in my area and asked about scrap pipe. Turns out that one place by me had some 24" diameter pipe that was leftover from a Florida power and light project. The piece was 10 foot long and it has a .375" thickness. I'm making two smokers out of it and they charged m...

Re: best type/ material of casters

More then anything I was just unsure of what material is going to hold up outside in Florida. Wasn’t sure if some sort of hard rubber, phenolic or polyurethane would be better for the elements

best type/ material of casters

I'm about to order the casters for my build and was curious what guys think is the best type of casters for a patio smoker that will be on my pool deck virtually all the time. So basically just a small amount of rolling around here and there. I was looking at something like these https://www.amazon....

Re: Firebox to cook chamber opening shape

ahh yep, so I was right and it was rounding the numbers to whole numbers then. Makes sense. Thanks for the fix. This is probably what I will go with. With my firebox having such a big diameter the bottom of it is going to sit pretty close to the ground if I put it as low as possible on the cook cham...

Re: Firebox to cook chamber opening shape

Pete, This was my original idea of how to do it but I noticed something kind of funny that I can't figure out unless I'm missing something easy somewhere. See how you typed in 62 in the spot it says (throat area from the pit calc), and it spits out an overall height of 7 and width of 17 for a calcul...

Re: Firebox to cook chamber opening shape

I didn't really figure that it would matter much but I haven't seen it talked about anywhere on the forum so figured I'd ask. Now on a half circle shaped hole would you put the long edge toward the bottom side of the cook chamber and the radius up by the cooking grate or the other way around? I'm lo...

Firebox to cook chamber opening shape

So I'm starting my first build. I have a 24" diameter 3/8 thick steel pipe. The cook chamber is going to be 44" with a firebox of 17". I got a 5" piece of pipe for a smokestack. Here is my question, running the numbers it says I need 61.52 sq in for a throat size. Is there any optimal shape of that ...
